We received the following information from Ernie Haase this morning:
It is with great sorrow that I must tell you that our beloved George went home to be with the Lord this morning (April 11th, 2005) at approx. 3:30 am.
We are sad and life will never be the same but we are happy for George. He had been so very sick and in much pain for the last few months but now He is healthier and happier than he has ever been.
More details to follow concerning the funeral.
Please continue to pray for the family.

Absent from the body present with the Lord.
Well he always said he was packed and ready to go "Supper Time". the Lord has called him Home (must need the greatest bass singer ever for the heavenly Choir).
I came across the cathedrals by accident and when they came to Glasgow went saw, heard and was hooked. I spoke with George after vthe concert and I was touched by his concern and love (to me a stranger) and I have been blessed ever since. I have wrote to him a few times and was always encouraged and blessed he took time to reply - what a Godly man he was.
I am just thinking the word tells us there is rejoicing in heaven when sinners come to repentance but I can't help but imagine the rejoicing and singing in Heaven now.
what a reunion George & Glen signing personally before the Lord of lords and King of Kings.
My prayers are with his family and all who will miss this inspirational man.
See you soon George. -
What a great loss to SGM, put God now has another great voice in his kingdom. I know that George is singing with his old buddy Glenn Payne.
My prayers are with the Younce family. -
I remember the first Southern Gospel concert I ever attended. I was 11 years old and went to see the Cathedrals in Alexandria, LA. I got to spend about an hour with Danny Funderburk and George Younce after the concert. They made a very big impression on my life. If it had not been for that moment, I do not believe I would be singing today. George, we love you and we will miss you but we are so glad you are finely home.

It was my privilege to see the Cathedral Quartet in person on at least three occasions. Since the area of Illinois I reside in is not a "traditonal" hotbed of SGM, whenever the top groups come here, it is a real treat. One evening, during a concert in Champaign IL, the group took questions from the audience. George called on me, and I asked him to tell us about Big Chief.....and George did, and even did his dead-on voice impersonation. What a faithful servant! What a faithful family man! What a faithful quartet man! He wasn't perfect, but mighty close. Now, no more pain, no more ailments, nothing but being in the presence of Almighty God! Weeelllllllllll.......GLORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Without a doubt, George was one of the best bass singers of all time. He, Glen, Danny Funderburke, Mark Trammell, Roger Bennett, Gerald Wolfe, and all of the other Cathedral members made this group one of the "super-heavyweight" quartets of all time. This group would leave audiences in an awe that matched or even exceeded in some cases the ability of quartets such as the Blackwood Brothers, Statesmen, Kingsmen, Gold City, Stamps, Florida Boys, Dixie Echoes, Inspirations, Palmetto State Quartet, Imperials, etc. George and Glen were the two that were always with this quartet and they made it (the quartet) what it was. Both of them, however, would tell you that none of their success would have even been possible without the Lord. George was not only a great singer, but a great stage personality and a great and humble servant of the Lord. George will sadly be missed, but I know that the great big choir just got a whole lot better. Another legendary personality and voice of Bill Gaither's homecoming videos has "gone home", but we know that our loss is Heaven's gain. God Bless George Younce and his family.

I also mourn at the passing of George Younce, through I'm certain the choir in heaven is improving all the time as God's singers are going home. With each passing, it makes all the Homecoming videos such a deeper treasure. We are so blessed that Bill Gaither has been preserving the voices of the God's gospel choir. My prayers are with the Younce family.
