I try to make sure that my family recycles anything that can be recycled. Our town doesn’t have curb side pick up for recyclables so I take them to a recycling center in our area. I feel guilty tossing something into the garbage that can be recycled. I’m a person who hates seeing stuff tossed out on the side of the road and I never allow my kids to do this.
My opinion is that Christians should try to take care of the earth because God originally placed Adam and Eve in the garden with the mandate to take of it. This is in addition to the fact that if Jesus doesn’t come back soon our kids are going to be dealing with finding new ways to dispose of mountains of garbage. That’s not a legacy I want to leave. I use cloth diapers on my baby because (1) it’s better for him, (2) I don’t feel guilty throwing away bags of diapers that will take who knows how long to break down, (3) I don’t spend money on expensive disposables, (4) cloth diapers are sooo cute!
I don’t see why doing things to keep the earth a little cleaner mean that you have to be classified as a left wing tree hugger, and if you are a Christian you can’t be concerned with the environment. Perhaps Christians should actually be leading the charge on this one by saying that we are stewards of what God has given us and the Bible does say to do everything as if you are doing it to Him. As with everything, I think we have to take into account that there is a balance between doing what’s right for people and what’s right for our environment. As for global warming, I don’t know if it is real or not, but I can’t help thinking when there are millions of vehicles out there spewing out fumes on a daily basis, that is going to eventually impact the air quality somehow. Look at the major cities where there’s a brown haze hanging in the air.
There’s no denying that many of our health-related issues can be traced back to pollution of water, air, etc. And after all, the creation is under a curse and even groans under it. So I can’t wait for the day when Jesus says “Behold, I make all things new”! I think that we can’t begin to understand how beautiful the new earth will be without all the trash and pollution upon it. Now that, my friends, should make lost environmentalists want to get saved!
