You know when you get on a website to check something, such as sogospel, or a credit card or what ever it may be—-and they ask if you want the computer to remember it be checking the box———-well, my question is, how safe is that?
I don’t really have a problem with a message board like this, but I do with a credit card, because I feel some “hacker” could get into it if they were so inclined, if it’s registered to “be remembered”—-but perhaps I am wrong, can someone shed light on this subject for all of us computer illiterate people? cheese

It is always wise to be sure that you log-out of any site that you have entered sensitive information on.  When a website asks if you want the password stored, it stores the password in your browser cache.  This is safe as long as no one else but you uses your computer, or if you password protect your computer.  If you browse the web on an unsecure network and you don’t have good virus protection there are ways hackers can get to you through scripts or viruses that you may download or receive via email.

It always pays to be safe.  Log-out when you are done.  Never open email attachments you don’t know about.  Always keep your virus protection up-to date and scan your computer often.  Do not use Internet Explorer to browse the web.  It is notoriously un-safe.  Use caution when clicking on links.

Hope this helped a little.  smile

Another recommendation, if you are using Internet Explorer 7, is to delete the information before you close your browser.

Here’s how :
- click on “tools’
- click on “internet options”
- under browsing history click on “delete”
- at the bottom click “delete all”
this deletes the following : temporary internet files, cookies, browsing history, form data, and
passwords. And of course you can delete these entries individually also.

This is recommended each time you get ready to close your browser.
It is just one way to help keep your computer secure.

Greg

Side note on Internet Explorer : Microsoft has patches that will fix the “hacker” issue. They were issued weeks ago. It is a safe browser. But, as with any program, it is the responsiblity of the user to keep the computer protection updated.

Yeah, just do like I do:  keep a file named “Passwords And Other Stuff That You May Need to Hack Into Any Account I ve Anywhere” where you can keep a list of passwwords, usernames, and the like.  I do have this because I can’t remember ALL of this stuff…

FireFox has options to delete all your history/form-data/cookies, etc when you close the browser.  That works so much better than IE’s option.
