Jason Crabb
The Crabb Family rose to fame in the Southern Gospel arena at a fairly quick pace and one of the major reasons for that was Jason Crabb. They found that "it factor" that was missing in the genre at that time. No doubt you still have this same touch. Jason, what do you think gave you and the Crabb Family that special "it" that rose you to the top?
Well let me first say that our success as the Crabb Family was a total team effort. We wouldn’t have been as successful without everyone participating and giving their all. If there is one “major” reason for our success though, it was the call on our life by the Holy Spirit of God and our willingness to just Go! God blessed us with amazing messages in songs and we tried to deliver them with as much passion and love for His Word as we could. Perhaps if there is an “it factor”, it could be that we possibly reached a younger generation and brought them in to love this great music.
You are the popular singer that you are because you have adapted your own style of singing, but who were the vocal influences in forming the style you have today?
I’ve had many people that I admire as far as their singing goes and I don’t want to leave out any but, Michael English, Russ Taff, The Gaither Vocal Group, and Donnie McClurkin readily come to mind. As far as my style goes, I don’t know if it fits into any category at all, I just promised God that I would use my voice to glorify Him and give it my all. If lives are being changed (by their own testimony) because of what they are hearing from me, then I must be doing what God wants. That’s my style!
Speaking of style, you have a great appeal to Black audiences, yet you still have tremendous appeal to the Southern Gospel Crowd. Explain that to us.
We all have somewhat different “styles” of worship don’t we? Without being stereotypical, the audiences that have been predominantly black worship similar to the way I was raised. Lift your voice, raise your hands, put on your “happy face” and just love Him as you worship. Too often I feel people think there is a way we should or shouldn’t act in church. While I do believe things should be done decently and in order, your outward show of emotion and love for your Savior just might be the thing that the unsaved person next to you needs.
Singing as a soloist is a totally different game than singing with a group. What's the difference mentally?
Mentally I take on the fear and responsibility that if my voice is not up to par, then I will disappoint the crowd that has come to see me. As a soloist, there is no back-up plan. What's the difference physically? Physically it is more demanding because I could rest my voice when my siblings were singing, and I had moments to reflect and enjoy the worship experience as a participant.
Is there a difference in the way you have to minister now?
Nothing comes to mind as far as a difference in the way I minister now as apposed to when I was with the family.
What can the fans now expect to see when they attend a Jason Crabb concert?
I do have some new stuff and we’re always trying to create a great worship experience. They will certainly hear many of the songs that I’ve sung over the years, but no two concerts are the same. The band and I are constantly trying new things and I hope the people that come out to see us enjoy it and feel like they’ve been ministered to. That’s our goal!
Since you are so widely known for your singing abilities, many fans may not know that you are also a Minister. What part does preaching play in your ministry?
I am currently preaching about three to four dates per month. God has called me to spread the Word, whether it’s through song or sermon, He said tell everyone about His wonderful love and mercy. I’m comfortable going from song to sermon or sermon to song. When God leads and I’m in front of an audience, I simply follow.
Are you any good at it?
You’ll have to ask those people who’ve been in the services. If people coming to the altar and surrendering their lives, people weeping and giving up things in their life that are hindering them from serving God is an indication of being good at this, well then………..Give God the glory.
What made you realize that that God had placed that call on your life?
When I realized I couldn’t say everything I wanted to say in a song. As I studied God’s Word, I realized there is so much in the bible that cannot be expressed in a song alone. At our concerts, no matter the venue or where I was on the schedule, if God laid it on my heart to preach His Word, I did. One time at CrabbFest on nationwide radio, during what was supposed to be a concert, God laid it on my heart to preach. We filled the altar with people whose lives were changed. When God says do something, I’ve learned to just obey, no matter what. I knew from that moment, God had more in store for me than just singing his praises!
You have just signed with Spring Hill Music Group with a recording contract. What can we expect to hear from your music in the future?
I am so excited and blessed to be working with Barry Jennings, Paul Sizelove and Bill Carter. Together, I believe we can reach out and spread the music we all love to a greater and more diverse audience. You should expect to hear the same thing you’ve heard from the beginning of my career, songs that minister to people and edify my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are currently looking at new songs and producers and I can’t wait to get in the studio to record. So if you’re at one of my concerts, expect to hear some new stuff that just might be on my debut solo project.
Do you plan on singing some of your Dad's songs?
Sure, I have been doing some writing with him here lately. I sort of start out with an idea for a song and he writes the lyrics. Then we both put the music to it. I’m excited about what we’ve come up with so far and hope people like it, too.
Now you are traveling with your wife and family, how does your family fit into your future ministry?
I love having my wife and babies on the road with me. Shellye keeps me straight each day (which is hard to do) and on occasion, Ashleigh and Emma get up and help me sing. You know, train up a child right! I know when school starts for Ashleigh things will change but right now I really enjoy getting to spend this much time with them. This will be even more special when I go back into the studio and begin this new project. That will take some time away from them so I’m enjoying them on the road very much!
What are you looking to as the future for the ministry of Jason Crabb, and how can the fans help you get there?
I want to continue to sing and preach God’s Word. I have a real passion and burden for the youth of this world and want to reach this generation for Christ. I want my first solo project to be the best project I’ve ever done. I will soon have an all Hymns CD that I’m also excited about. Expect to see more of me on The Gaither Network, at Gaither Homecomings and hosting TBN and on some other projects we currently have in the works. Fans can help by supporting my concerts in attendance, purchasing my CDs and stuff, but most of all I want and need their prayers. The devil really fights those of us who stand for God and I need your prayers most of all!
