THE TRUTH IS…THE TRUTH
![]() Whenever people know they are wrong and can’t provide factual evidence to support their viewpoint, they revert to attacking the messenger. This works in politics, sometimes, but not with me. I really don’t care what you call me or what you say about me.
IF YOU ARE SENDING A SONG TO RADIO THAT DOESN’T MEET ALL 3 CRITERIA…YOU ARE WASTING YOUR MONEY. YOU DO THE MATH Our company has artists who are interested in getting their songs to radio. We will send their songs to radio, but only if the song is musically competitive. In addition, we take the time beforehand to be sure the artist understands that we are interested in “SPINS” not chart position. My experience is SGM has taught me that longevity is one of the keys to success. I cannot count the number of artists who had the potential to have a long and solid career in SGM but instead became a flash in the pan because they bought into the flawed concept of “We’ll get your songs on the charts” as a way of building their ministries. In closing, I remind you that people can twist words but numbers don’t lie. Let me offer the following comparison for you. As a “Newbie” artist you can elect to do “Radio Tracking”. The cost for one year for 2 songs at an average price of $500.00 to get on the disc, and $500.00/month for the tracking will be $7000.00. I hate to be the bearer of news, but at the end of the year you could – most likely WILL - be at the same place you are right now. You may have a few days of being able to call your Aunt Mabel and tell her that your song charted #77 on some music chart, but chances are Aunt Mabel will never hear it on her local radio SG radio station. OR: You can work 3 dates every weekend in your area of ministry with an average of $400.00/date, not including product sales, and take 1 weekend off every month to spend with your family. That’s 40 weekends at $1200.00 = $48000.00. I repeat, “Forty Eight Thousand Dollars”. At the end of the year you can have the next year already booked. I can teach you how to do this. It is not difficult and it is the right way to build your ministry, better than trying to get on the charts. AAHHHH!!!...THE CHARTS…don’t get me started! As always, I welcome your comments. God Bless You, Nick Bruno http://www.nickbruno.com Reader Comments

Great article Nick! I am amazed at the people who waste money in this industry on radio. I have so many friends that spend the kind of money Nick is talking about and it does them no good.
Instead, they could split that money up in the group and take a nice family vacation! It is easy to make a decent living in this industry. My wife and I are full time and we have a very comfortable lifestyle. We record in house, book in house and we even have our own CD duplication biz! We get the print done professional and we have thermal burners/shrinkwrappers. Our CD's look great and cost 35 cents! How much does your "LABEL" charge you??????? I just returned tonight from singing at a small church Christmas Banquet. It was 48 miles from my house. They wrote me a check for $750.00. We sold $480.00 at the table ( to 100 people) and we will sing in 2 more churches tomorrow. You can do the math and see that I will have about $3000.00 in income this weekend. After my travel(200 miles for the weekend!) and operating costs....that leaves a pretty good salary! The key is this: QUIT GIVING EVERYONE ELSE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!! Seriously...it is not hard folks!

Wow, Nick, I think this is one of the best you've written to date. Please "newbies" be very careful and think about things before you spend a lot of hard earned money. I nearly got caught up in one of these scams myself. Keep it up Nick, keep it up!

Once again, EXCELLENTLY written, TRUTHFUL article. Your love for artists and for SGM is shining through. You could be singledhandedly saving the industry with your fearless words. Might we call you "Saint NicK'.. just for this month.. it seems appropriate.

I was contacted recently by one of these groups and the money they are asking is not as expensive as some of what you mentioned so possibly they are logit. Interestingly though, the charts were still mentioned although this particular company emphasized promoting in the Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisian area. We do not have the need for promotion in Podunk Holler, SC.
The problem with a compilation cd with a known artist is that the known artist will invariably get airtime before the unknown. Consequently, when all is said and done the rich get richer and I have done nothing but pay for their airtime and, as you mentioned, whenever the time frame comes around that was agreed upon we are in the same position as before the compilation cd. Keep shedding light on this corrupt part of our industry.

Good article Nick. It's amazing how many times I get postcards or telephone calls from artists thanking me for playing their music WHEN I'M NOT. They are usually groups that I've never heard of on obscure comp discs that I've never listened to.
I used to think that these misguided artists were trying to get me to listen to their song - and they might be - but now I see that it's probably just part of the SG scam. One question...what's the point of having your song shipped to radio all over the country when you lack effective distribution?

BINGO Tim...the truth shall set you free! Your comment now begs the question, what is the purpose of radio stations playing the song? From your comments I would propose that it is simply for distibution purposes and NOT from what ministry value the song may have.
The scam is two fold. Yes it is from the promoters who want to make more $$$. However the real scam is in our heart's desire to be "discovered" and forgetting why we got into this in the first place. If we get ourselves where we should be then there is no market for the scam promoter. I understand the whole concept of marketing and what is worthy of being listened to. After all you cannot reach the heart if the music cannot get through the ears. If we, as musicians, are guided by the scripture "seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you..." rather than simply the desire to be heard then God may give us more than we ever asked or hoped for in the first place.

Another comp scam to watch out for....There are comps that put one or two big name artists on a CD with a song that is close to being a #1. The rest of the disc is filled with groups that wanted to be on the same CD with Mr. Big Name. The pitch is that radio will see the big name group and you will be "guilty of quality by association" and get airplay.
What these people don't tell you is that the #1 song from this big name artist has been out six months. Radio is paying no attention to this big name group on this comp CD- or anything else on the CD including your song - because radio has picked up the big name artist from a primary comp company. This scam just feeds on people's egos..."I'm on the same comp disc as so and so..."
