![]() Nashville, TN. George Strait has landed his first record at Christian radio."You'll Be There" shipped today through a promotion and release agreement between Rick Hendrix Company and MCA Records. After scoring fifty #1 country singles in Billboard Magazine, George Strait's faith-based song "You'll Be There" is reaching Christian playlists all over the country. Reader Comments
Chris, you said that only 3 of 30 listen to ANY form of Gospel music. The majority(not all of course) of secular music has a message that does not agree with Gods word, thus, I consider that garbage. Hey, I listened to several different genre of secular music before I even discovered Christian music, and when I go back and listen to those styles of music it is only one or two songs before I get convicted of the lyrics.

I got an idea! Lets change the subject. Which came first, the chicken or the egg ?

Chris,
Phil's point isn't a matter of like SG over contemporary gospel or any other genre of Gospel music and calling it trash. It's a point that if the lyrics don't glorify God then it probably shouldn't be on a Christians playlist. I Loved Boston, Chicago, Huey Lewis, Metallica, and other Godless groups of the 80's. But when I got saved I stopped listening to that because it didn't glorify God. If you haven't heard and seen what is going on in todays secular music ie. SEX, drugs, Sex, cop killin, Sex, crack smokin, Sex, crying in my beer, Sex. I keep looking for any glorification of God in there. Chris, that is trash! The fact of the matter, and the point of this article is George Straight's new single. Calling it a faith based song is like seeing the color blue and saying that it's actually purple. Yea, purple is a color but it ain't blue. For the reasons I said in my earlier post, the song has nothing to do with Biblical faith. It is a money making venture for Rick. I say, "You Go Rick." but, like I said, I for one am glad that my faith doesn't rely on if's and maybe's.

Now that we are sort of on a tangent let me ask this question since I started moving us in this direction. I can see where this artist may be just trying to sell some records by singing a "faith-based" song and sending it to Christian radio. Before we throw too many rocks at him, let's not forget the hundreds of country and rock artists that have done this in the past and received plenty of airplay on Christian radio. In my mind I hear Willie Nelson singing "The Family Bible" as an example. And, friends, I am not questioning Willie's faith nor do I want to go that way.
My question, finally, is if, as Chris U. says, 85% of Christians are listening to secular radio and Christian artists really want to "minister" to Chrisitans and reach the unregenerate...then don't they need to be thinking of how they can get their music on secular radio? It seems that what the country music machine thinks defines Gospel Music are songs about Momma and Heaven. Not that there is anything wrong with those songs, but it seems that people will be drawn to Christ by our focusing upon what true love is, what real forgiveness is, what real compassion is, etc. instead of focusing just upon Mom, apple pie and Heaven. Perhaps the lesson for the "gospel crowd" is that we need to be figuring out how to get to the "secular crowd". It seems that Jesus took a lot of heat for hanging out with the prostitutes, tax collectors and the like in the New Testament. Unfortunately, our fight is not against flesh and blood so you can be sure the enemy does not want Christ-centered or even Christ-focused songs on the radio whether it is on a secular or Christian station.

The sad thing is that I didn't bring that statistic up to condemn the church for not listening to Gospel music (ever heard of personal conviction?), CCM vs. secular (I'm not sure where that thought EVER came from) or whether or not my TNT group at church has "victory in jesus" (btw, my group at church has to be one of the most God-fearing bunch I've ever met - regardless of whether or not they listen to that "garbage").
The point was - what if SG stations played this song (not in regular rotation per se), someone heard it and loved it and kept listening and got turned on to the Gospel music that we so love? Radio is a business. It's about gaining more listeners. If by playing this song occassionally you gain more listeners into the SG family - I say GO FOR IT.

I do have to respond to this statement:
"If you haven't heard and seen what is going on in todays secular music ie. SEX, drugs, Sex, cop killin, Sex, crack smokin, Sex, crying in my beer, Sex." LOL. Yeah - that's what ALL secular music is about. Way to trow the baby out with the bath water.

Ok Chris, what "secular" popular music are you listening to? ENYA? I think thats the way you spell that. What I'm saying is that most of the POPULAR "secular" music glorifies all those things I listed. I'm sorry for the blanket statement but I know only what I listened to before I became a christian. I will agree with your statement that said:
Radio is a business. It's about gaining more listeners. If by playing this song occassionally you gain more listeners into the SG family - I say GO FOR IT. I'm just saying that the song is whitewashed and tells nothing biblical. Just a guy wanting to see his loved one in Heaven. That MAYBE he'll make it in if he follows the Good Light. Do we want to attract people to God by telling them a small portion of the truth thereby getting them close and then proverbially springing a trap of the whole truth on them?

We'll just have to agree to disagree Brian. Obviously we aren't hearing the same stuff, or we have selective hearing - hearing only the bad stuff.

AMEN- George probably lives a better life than some of the SO-called Christians. I think whatever makes someone listen to the word, or wanna go to HEAVEN. Let it play.

Ok...now I'm confused...Are you guys saying all secular music is bad? And if we as christians listen to it..then we are filling ourselves with garbage? If so how are you getting that...and what biblical principals are you using? Do you think it is wrong to listen to a love song or dance to a love song with your spouse? Just curious on this one?
