This month I want to complete my articles on Objects of Singing. I have two more scriptures that speak of certain objects of singing. The first one is found in Psalms 51:14.

It says “Deliver me from my bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall SING aloud of Thy righteousness.” Here, David is confessing to the sin of having Bathsheba’s husband sent to the front lines of battle to be killed, and David is asking for God’s forgiveness and deliverance from this terrible sin that he had been involved in. We find the story of Uriah and this incident in 2 Samuel 11. I will not rehash or go into depth about the story, I think we all know about it. My goal here is to show that singing was used to Glorify God for deliverance and God’s imputed RIGHT STANDING (righteousness) to David.

This verse of scripture (Psalms 51-14) puts David in the position of asking for deliverance and forgiveness, and David is asking the Lord to make him clean from his sin in order that he have his right standing (which is God’s righteousness in him) restored.. So David is saying upon deliverance and restoration from You (God) I will be able to sing about it and I will have my right standing restored.

That is the great thing about God. He wants us to be forgiven and our right standing with Him be in tact. That is why He is willing to forgive our sins and our unrighteousness and set us back on a solid footing with Him. To me that is one of the most powerful things about serving God. He loves you so much that He is willing to forgive you and restore your right standing. THAT IS THEREFORE A SPECIAL TIME TO SING ALOUD ABOUT HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS.

In verse 15 David asked God to “open my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise”. In other words; God anoint me to speak the right words of praise for this wonderful thing you have done for me. Then in verse 16 David says : “For thou desirest not sacrifice ; else would I give it; thou delightest not in burnt offering. Vs 17 says The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

David is saying something very poignant, and we should all listen to it.

1. Ask for forgiveness when you sin against God.

2. Understand that God is the God of your salvation, and you can not save yourself or make yourself righteous. Salvation is only acquired by man when He submits his will to God’s control.

3. Once we have asked for forgiveness we are to sing aloud of God’s righteousness. (All of man’s righteousness is but filthy rags) Therefore, we can never sing about how righteous we are within ourselves, but we can only sing of God’s righteousness when we have been forgiven and God’s righteousness has been imputed unto us through that forgiveness. It is also saying that the righteousness of God being imputed unto us through that forgiveness is the CAUSE TO SING.

Therefore making our singing to be like what is said in verse 15 is the way that God will be glorified through our singing.

4. Verse 15 says David says “ God open my lips” - in other words we should pray that God would anoint our lips as we sing. Verse 16 We should understand that what we think is sacrifice to God, God might not necessarily think is sacrifice.

5. Verse 17 David says in essence - The sacrifices that please God are singing that comes from a BROKEN SPIRIT AND A CONTRITE HEART. IN OTHER WORDS IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW GOOD YOU THINK YOU ARE AT SINGING. IF YOUR SINGING DOESN’T COME FROM A BROKEN SPIRIT AND A CONTRITE HEART, THEN GOD IS NOT IN IT.

David says in the last phrase of this verse “O God thou wilt not despise” He is saying here God will not despise a broken and contrite heart. If that is true, and it is, then the antithesis is also true. SINGING THAT IS ONLY DONE FROM A PROFESSIONAL BASIS AND DOESN’T COME FROM A BROKEN AND CONTRITE HEART WILL BE DESPISED BY GOD.

Therefore it doesn’t matter how great of a singer you are, if your heart is not right, then you will not please God. You can please man. You can get man to give you standing ovations, and applaud you and even follow after you.

WHAT YOUR MISSION SHOULD BE AS A GOSPEL SINGER IS TO BE THE VERY BEST THAT YOU CAN TO HONOR GOD. If you do that I can guarantee you that God will see that the men and women that He desires you to touch for Him will receive.

I would rather go to Heaven and see people whose lives were changed because GOD USED ME TO MINISTER TO THEM THROUGH SINGING, than to go to Heaven and not see any fruit from my labors. If I only sing from a professional standpoint without my spirit being broken and my heart contrite, then I will reap what I sow. I believe that every Gospel Singer should study, and make themselves the very best that they can be for the Lord. That is why I have studied all of my life. However, if I ever approach my singing with a haughty spirit and self righteous attitude, I don’t believe that God will be pleased.

MORE THAN ANYTHING, I WANT TO PLEASE GOD. I hope that this is your attitude. If it is not, please pray about it and see if you can let God change your heart. Even as Christians, everyday we must allow God to rule in our lives. We can do nothing without Him. We need God. We get Him, and we get to be close to Him in those special times when we commune with him. The kind of prayer that we need to be involved in, in order to see God’s blessings on our singing ministries, is the same kind of prayer that David prayed here.

GOD MAKE MY HEART RIGHT. Sometimes this kind of prayer takes longer than the short prayers that we pray in the Sunday services. This doesn’t happen because God can’t change us immediately. It happens because we just get so full of ourselves, that we are not able to allow God to change and help us.

Therefore, this kind of prayer sometimes takes some time for us to get our own spirit in the position to hear and accept what God wants of us. BEFORE YOU SING FOR GOD, PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. You will be surprised at how effective your ministry becomes.

One more place in the Bible that singing is talked about is in Revelation 14:3.

The first phrase of this verse is significant to singing, it says : “And they sung as it were a new song before the throne........” I am not going into the interpretation of this verse and the verses around it. My interpretation might be different than yours, and I can see no useful purpose in getting into the confusion that those differences might bring. For our purpose, I would just like to say that in Heaven we will have A NEW SONG. I believe that this song is THE SONG OF THE REDEEMED. This is just one more proof that there will be singing in Heaven.

I also preach the gospel. It is notable that nowhere in the Bible is there mentioned that preachers would preach in Heaven. But it is noted that there will be singing. I know I am excited about the fact that when the Lord comes back for us all, our destination is to be with Him, and we will all be singing praises unto Him throughout eternity. I even believe that those who cannot sing here on earth will be able to praise God through their singing in Heaven. “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be, sweet home of the happy and free, fair haven of rest for the weary, how beautiful heaven must be”. Praise God for the promise of Heaven. I am so looking forward to it. It grows sweeter each day for me, especially since I am getting older. I think about Heaven a lot more nowadays. I praise and thank God for the promise of Heaven. I am looking forward to singing, and singing and singing in Heaven. May God richly bless each of you. I am getting too blessed , sitting here and contemplating Heaven. I am going to have to close for this month and just shout and cry for a little while.

Remember Psalm 118:6 says “The Lord is on my side”. Remember that He is on your side too.
