Woody Wright – Brand New Song

Producer:   Woody Wright
Label:   Independent Release
Website:   http://www.woodywright.net

Woody Wright wears many hats in our industry and he wears most of them right here on this recording.  Producer, singer, songwriter and musician are 4 major roles he plays here, and he juggles them all exceedingly well.  Woody is at the top of his field when it comes to all 4, and “Brand New Song” showcases those gifts very well.  That is basically what this recording is, and showcase of sorts, as someone else has recorded many of these tunes, and it is here that Woody turns in his own renditions of these excellent tunes as well as several new ones.

The bouncy feel of “GOD IS LOOKING AT MY HEART” is given a similar treatment as Kenny Bishop’s rendition, but just a bit faster.  I’d always thought the title song, “BRAND NEW SONG”, recorded by the Gaither Vocal Band, was a bit on the unusual side, musically.  That’s one thing I’ve noticed about Woody’s writing style, he can be a bit eccentric (and I say that as a complement), but it’s always great stuff.

The strong country feel of the upbeat “GO THROUGH IT” will no doubt be a listener favorite, as will the fun tunes “I WANT TO LIVE”, “EXTREME MAKEOVER”, “I’VE BEEN BLESSED” (which has a great quartet feel to it) and “HUMBLY GRATEFUL” (great message found in this little nugget).  Though these songs tend to lean more on the light-hearted side, they really have great, thought provoking lyrics.

The powerful lyrics of “MERCY, FORGIVENESS AND GRACE” pretty much says it all…“I misbehaved just like a kid, I thought my life was ruined by the wrong I did, I caused some tears, and I broke some hearts, I hit the bottom and I wondered where to start…I was ashamed to ask the Lord for help again…but He gave me mercy, forgiveness and grace…” Another great song that falls in a similar vein is the uptempo, “UNDER THE BLOOD”.

The highly enjoyable “GREAT DAY IN THE MORNING” and the slower tempo “MORE THAN AMAZING” were both recorded by Paid in Full and Woody turns in his own renditions.  Though they do not stray too far from PIF’s versions, it’s always great to hear it straight from the heart of the songwriter.  Woody closes things out with the light feel of “RIGHT NOW, RIGHT HERE”.

It’s only in the last couple of years that I have really become a huge fan of Woody’s writings.  It wasn’t until last year that I really started to “get it”.  You can’t pigeonhole Woody’s lyrical style to one style, and that’s great.  He writes about a vast majority of subjects and writes them in a way that anybody can relate to.  I guess you could say he writes for the common man, and while they are for the most part, simple; they are quite deep on several different planes.

As far as this particular recording goes, it’s his “Country Side” recording that still resonates with me as his best work.  If you like a strong country sound with your gospel, then you will really enjoy the music of Woody Wright.  There is lots of great material here and many great musical moments.

Heard a few of the new songs on Solid Gospel this morning. "God Is Looking At My Heart" sounds great on the radio (well, actually through my computer speakers). I can't wait to get my copy!!!!

I've Been Blessed has become my testimony. the past year has been rough as I've fought cancer for the third time. I've been repeating the words I'm blessed to keep my spirits up. then I heard Woody at Rob and Judy Coleman's church, bought the CD and have played the song over and over. This is exactly how I feel.
