Unshackled– On My Way

Producer: Dedra Henry
Label:
New City Records

This group hails from Carrollton , Georgia and the personnel on this recording include husband and wife team, Tony and Janet Gable on lead and alto respectively, along with female tenor, Betty Maddox. The group seems to have a mixed sound; kind of a cross between the Hinsons and an early version of the Steeles. The recording starts off with three up-tempo songs, “ ARE YOU READY”, “ON MY WAY” and “TRUST ME”, before slowing down for the song “IF YOU ONLY KNEW”.

As we move along through the remainder of the recording we find “LET THE SPIRIT”, “RIGHT HERE”, “THE BATTLE WAS WON”, “IT'S WEDDING TIME IN HEAVEN”, “TIME TO GET IT RIGHT” and “RUN, RUN, RUN”.

Nine of the ten songs were either written or co-written by Tony Gable, and for the most part, they are pretty good. I didn't find a tremendous amount of depth to some of the songs, but I still did find them to be pretty decent pieces of work. The overall quality of the recording is adequate and the music tracks are pretty good. Musically, there isn't much variety though, and vocally there are a couple of pitch issues. The best songs on the recording are the first 4 songs. After that, it kind of nose-dives for me. That isn't to say that this is a terrible recording. On the flipside, I hear a lot of potential. With the right guidance and combination of variables, I think this group and their songs could make a mark on the industry. Like I stated earlier, the group reminds of the early years of the Steeles, and look at the mark they've made! So keep a lookout on this group as they could be on the horizon of something greater.

I have had the pleasure of watching this group grow from the beginning. I can honestly say, "they are spirit led" and faithfull in the work that they do. I have enjoyed being in their concerts and listening to all their songs on CD. I especially enjoy The Battle was Won and Let the Spirit. Those are the kinds of songs that you keep in your head and heart and gets you through the day. I know the Lord has truely blessed them with his annointing. May God continue to Bless you Unshackled in all that you attempt to do in His Name.

I have know Tony and Janet Gable for number of years and rarely do you find two people more dedicated to a cause than these Two. Foremost, to the cause of Christ and then to Unshackled! They are so talented and yet so giving and caring. We are very proud of them and all that they have accomplished. Thanks for all you have meant to me over the years... We love you

While music has to be reviewed at a technical level, the real test is in the the impact it has on the listeners. "On My Way" hits a home run in this category. Those who listen to "On My Way" will be encouraged and uplifted. Unshackled has come through with a real gem that will bless the hearts of many. We highly recommend Unshackled as the next group to have sing at your church!
