It is good to be back with you this month via this column. I pray each month that I will be able to say something in this column that might lift your spirit, help you with a problem that you might be having, or say something that you haven't heard before about singing. I also try to keep things on a balance to where they are not too technical, but are useful to everyone that reads the column. I want to thank each and everyone of you, who read this column, for reading it. I always desire your prayers also, that I might be of service to the Lord by writing about the things that He has helped me to learn over the years. This month I want to continue talking about Bible verses that talk about singing.
Last month I closed the column by writing about Singing with your heart, I also talked about singing for joy. This month I want to start with a scripture from Jeremiah 31:7. This scripture talks about singing with gladness. It says,"For thus saith the Lord; sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations; publish ye, praise ye , and say, O Lord, save thy people, the remnant of Israel." In this scripture the prophet Jeremiah is admonishing the children of Israel to be proactive in claiming the victories that God had given them because they were the seed of (Jacob) Israel. The were told to sing with gladness for Jacob. I believe that Jeremiah was saying to them sing with gladness to celebrate the fact that Jacob had been with God and had his name changed to Israel, which we all know the story about, and ,as the children of Israel, they were the heirs of that great occasion. This was gladness that they could sing with, that they could shout about among the chief of nations, that they could write about (publish), that they could praise God about, and say "O Lord save thy people, the remnant of Israel" No wonder Jeremiah wrote this message. God was giving great hope to the Children of Israel about their coming together again. God was validating who they were and what He had in store for them.
Because of what God told the Children of Israel, through the Prophet Jeremiah about Jacob and how they should" sing with gladness for Jacob"(IIsrael), I believe that God would also admonish us as Christians to SING WITH GLADNESS about our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Children of Israel were of course named after the changed, renovated, reinvigorated, new Jacob, after his name change to Israel. Therefore we who are changed by the Risen Lord Jesus Christ, the one who died and conquered death, are named after Him, (Christ) as Christians how much more should we sing with great Gladness about Christ and His death, burial and resurrection. I am so happy that I can sing, with gladness, that I have believed, received and am on my way to Heaven shouting glory, because now I am named Christian, a follower of Christ. "I'm a Child of the King". I love that old song that the Prophet's bass singer, Mike Allen, sings. I love to hear it and sing it with him. " Praise God, Praise God, I'm a child of the King". I can sing it, shout it from the rooftops, "Praise God, Praise God ( I am a Christian named after the only begotten son of God) I'm a child of the King".
Another manner of singing is Singing with Spirit.- I Corinthians 14:15 says..........."I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also". This passage can be intrepeted in more than one way, depending on what denomination of church that you attend. I will try to give you a couple of ways. One way it is intrepreted is that we can sing as inspired by the Spirit of God, or with what most preachers call ,sing with the anointing. That is definitely a meaning of singing with the spirit that would be more widely accepted throughout the churchworld.
However, among pentecostals,of which I am one , it is intrepeted as singing in unknown tongues. Because this chapter talks specifically about speaking in tongues, and immediately after the phrase "sing with the spirit", the phrase, "I will sing with the understanding" is written by apostle Paul, it is widely understood, believed, and taught by Pentecostals that this means singing in other tongues. I happen to believe that myself, however I know that everyone who reads this column doesn't believe the same way I do. I respect that, therefore I also believe you could say of this passage that "sing with the spirt" could mean singing under the anointing. I happen to believe that it says both of these things .
The point that I want to make here is that whichever way you believe, It is imperative that as you sing, you should always be in tune with God in a manner that would make your singing be singing that is done under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to edify and glorify God and not just for your own edification. If I could say one thing to everybody, regardless of their belief, I would say "SING WITH THE SPIRIT, OR WITH THE ANOINTING, in such a way that you can touch people's hearts and win souls for the kingdom. Whether you are a Baptist, Pentecostal, Lutheran, Methodist, or whatever denomination of church you belong to, remember we all have the same goal and that is to sing to minister to people and "WITH THE SPIRIT" .
I happen to believe personally in the Pentecostal doctrinal tenants. BUT I DON'T BELIEVE THAT PENTECOSTALS WILL BE THE ONLY PEOPLE IN HEAVEN. Through my close to 50 years of singing gospel music, and over 30 years of preaching. I have sung and preached in almost every denomination of church there is ,among mainline protestant churchs, and I HAVE MET PEOPLE IN EACH ONE OF THEM THAT I BELIEVE ARE BORN AGAIN CHRISTIANS, AND ARE ON THEIR WAY TO HEAVEN.
So with that said, LET'S ALL SING FOR THE GLORY OF GOD,AND WITH THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, to the people that God gives us to sing to, with all the dedication to God, and WITH THE SPIRIT.
I am really glad that God never said in the Bible that there would be any doors in Heaven marked with denominational names. I am looking forward to enjoying Heaven with all of my friends , from all the different denominations of churches, that I have met over the years. There is an old song we used to sing in our church named, "Won't It Be Wonderful There". Praise God, I believe it will be even better than we can imagine. Sounds like I am preaching. Well I believe God wants us to witness through singing and preaching, however when we get to Heaven we preachers will be quiet, and there will be a lot of singing. That's what the Bible teaches. I know there are a lot singing fans who will love that.
God bless all of you. I am looking forward to seeing each one of you in Heaven.
Remember - Psalm 118:6 "The Lord is on my side" He is on your side too. Let Him bless you, He really wants to.
Your Brother in Christ,
Bill Baize

Whole-heartedly agree!! As artists, we tend to "get used" to the songs as we rehearse, and that translates to not "feeling" the meaning of the song. My prayer is always that as I stand before an audience that God will speak to my heart as well as theirs about the message of words that I'm singing.
