The McKameys - “An Acoustic Journey”

imageProducers: Jeff Collins/Roger Fortner
Label: Horizon Records

There are few groups I respect as much as I do the McKameys.  Though I am not a big fan of their style, they have a contagious spirit when they sing, even on a studio recording, that you can’t help but be drawn into their music.  True to its title, “An Acoustic Journey” is a collection of songs featuring the McKameys solely with acoustical instruments, with no piano, drums or electric guitars.  They are totally within their element on this recording, and the McKameys sound right at home.  At times, they even sound like the McKameys from the 70s…back to simpler times.

Starting things off on this “Acoustic Journey” is the up-tempo “ANYTIME,” which features Connie.  This refreshing number starts the recording off right and leads into the easy flowing “ONE OF THOSE DAYS”, which features Peg.

Carol steps up to sing the intriguing “I’VE PRAYED IN THE DARK BEFORE”, while Ruben takes the lead on the encouraging “WHO I AM.”

Two songs that stir me every time I hear them are “FORTASTE OF HEAVEN” and “GRACE WILL MUCH MORE ABOUND.”  Both of these songs would be excellent single releases for the group.  The messages found in these songs are both of comfort and faith.

Breaking into an up tempo song of thankfulness, the McKameys sing “I THANK THEE FOR THEM ALL.”  Thanking God above all for salvation, the group is also thankful for the little blessings as well that befall us each and every day.

With an old campmeeting feel, the McKameys do a super job on “GOD IS SO GOOD TO ME.”  Written in part by legendary songwriter Videt Polk (i.e.: “More Precious Than Gold”), this song is a definite highlight of the recording.

A captivating song about God’s grace is the song “GRACE WAS THE ANSWER.”  I like the main hook of the song; “Grace was the answer, before the question was why.”  Another noteworthy song is the simply titled, “HIS STORY”, which features Connie. Closing things out is an a capella version of a verse of “GOD IS SO GOOD TO ME.”

The McKameys have always been known for their strong, meaty songs and their extreme loyalty to their fans.  You may not be a fan of this group, but you have to appreciate their genuineness and sincerity and the major contributions they have made to Southern Gospel Music.  You will find no finer people in this industry and they are a true testament of the mercy and grace of God.  Fans of the McKameys will no doubt want to add this recording to their collection.  For their style, this is a fine recording.

Personal Favs: ANYTIME; FORTASTE OF HEAVEN; GOD IS SO GOOD TO ME; GRACE WILL MUCH MORE ABOUND

Rating: 4 Star Rating

I wanted to write and say that The McKameys just get better and better with each recording they do. I am so blessed at their Singings, and I feel like we're at Meetin' everytime, weather we're in a School or a Church....The Presence of The Lord shows up, and we always have such a Great Meetin'
I am HONORED to call them my Personal Friends, and I Love & Pray for them EVERYDAY....
I pull out their Schedule every Thursday, and I wonder where they are at that weekend, and I say a Special Pray for Traveling Mercies upon them all, and for Donald (bus driver) to get them to their locations on time, and safe....He's an excellent Bus Driver...I can't in just one email tell you how much I Think about The McKameys....I know their Genuine, Sencere, and I LOVE Each and Everyone of them More each day...They are a PRESCIOUS and "REAL" Group.
