Do You Have A Maintenance Or Mission Ministry? - Part 1

I recently read a great article discussing the differences between a “maintenance” church and a “mission” minded church. Simply put, the maintenance church has stopped growing, and has become more concerned with budgets, committees, and buildings than with gaining new members. The mission church is focused on sharing the Gospel and reaching the needs of the community in which it finds itself.

So that got me thinking: how could we apply this concept to our individual music ministries? Do you have a maintenance ministry or a mission ministry?

Here are a few thoughts to consider:

1. When contemplating change, the maintenance ministry says, “My audience won’t like this, so I won’t do it.” The mission ministry says, “This new song might bring new people into our concerts.”

2. When thinking about a vision for ministry, the maintenance ministry says, “We have to be faithful to our past.” The mission ministry says, “We have to learn from our past, but we also have to be faithful to our future.”

3. When meeting new audience members, the maintenance ministry says, “You don’t have our CDs. Ask our product table volunteer about our 10 CD package deal.” The mission ministry says, “How can we make our music available to you? CDs? Downloads? Flash drive?”

4. When dealing with pastors, the maintenance ministry says, “Here are our needs.” The mission ministry says, “How can we meet your needs?”

5. When thinking about events, the maintenance ministry asks, “How many people were in the audience?” The mission ministry asks, “How many people did we reach tonight?”

6. When thinking about change, the maintenance ministry asks, “How will this affect us?” The mission ministry says, “Will this increase our ability to reach the unchurched and the tired Christian?”

How does your ministry stand up? Do you have a maintenance ministry or a mission ministry?
