I have spent the past few months turning our garage into a music/rec room. This was a dream of mine as a teenager when my parents first moved our family into this house. I wanted a place where I could be alone and play my guitars really loud! This is the SAME house that Tim and I now live in with our two girls. The gentleman who bought the place from my parents had installed some wiring in the garage for outlets - one of them was definitely a 220 Volt. Another set of wires was live, but with the exposed ends capped off, we were not sure if it was a 220 also. Tim has continued to assure me that he knows about electricity, but I’ve been married to this man long enough to know that he’s mechanically challenged. In a moment of weakness, I decided to ask for Tim’s help with finishing the room. Enter Stage Left: Tim the Toolman.
I thought it would be nice to have outlets on both sides of the room, and those wires were in just the right place. We found the correct switch in the fuse box and killed the power to the wires to install an outlet. I confess that electrical work is not an area I have dabbled with, so I don’t claim to know much. I did notice, however, that the fuse to the wires Tim was holding was larger than the 110’s that led to normal outlets. I asked Tim several times if he was sure the fuse was NOT a 220. He repeatedly assured me it was a 110 and proceeded to install the outlet. When he finished, I asked him if we should test it. Tim said, “Yeah, grab a lamp.” The first thing I found was a disco ball Rachel had left when she moved into her dorm room, so I plugged it up and flipped the switch. BOOM! The bulb exploded! Fortunately, I hadn’t used a regular lamp, but the disco ball instead, which shielded us from the flying glass. That just goes to show how God protects us even when we are idiots.
God is a powerful God. Are we wired to receive His power? God cannot become smaller to adjust to our agenda. We must grow to meet His. His will is for us to become like Christ. Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
We tend to struggle with the servant issue. This is what is more commonly known as pride. The bigger we see ourselves, the smaller we really are spiritually - too small to receive the power of God that comes from His Holy Spirit. Only 110 volts strutting around like we are 220’s.
We must humble ourselves. But how? I got a good lesson in humility a couple of months ago when our septic tank went on the blink. Long story short, I had to take a bucket and empty the tank enough to replace the pump and install an outlet. Tim talked me through it while he was replacing the brakes on Rebecca’s vehicle. I wasn’t above the septic job, especially since we couldn’t afford to hire anyone else. The humble challenge for me happened several weeks later when I realized that the new pump was not working. I apparently unplugged one of the wires to the pump while trying to lower the concrete lid by myself. The new pump had frozen up and I was back to square one. I dug to the tank, lifted the lid, and grabbed another bucket. I stood there looking at the tank and I didn’t feel quite so motivated to do that job a second time. We were trying to learn songs for our new album; we had a radio single we were trying to promote; it seemed like a battle just to get through each day. The temperature had dropped to the 30’s and it was cold. Tim had not been able to get his infusions for two months and was already on antibiotics to try and stay healthy. As I began to drain the tank again, the tears began to fall. I wasn’t crying about my situation though. I found myself telling God, “I’m not above doing this. I’ll do whatever you want me to do. I’m not too good to dig up this tank.” I noticed that the more I prayed, the less difficult things seemed to be. Tim was even able to rewire the new pump for me. Wait a minute… rewire the pump! This is the same guy who tried to kill me yesterday with a disco ball!
