The Dills - The Story Of A Lifetime

Producer: Kevin Ward
Label: Crossroads
Website: http://www.thedills.net

I have watched the Dills over the course of the last 4 or 5 years mature from a group filled with tremendous potential to a group seeing that great potential realized. I'm just waiting for everyone else to see it. Their sound is reminiscent to that of the Nelons and a vocal structure that makes me think of the Hemphills, but they definitely have their own unique musical personality. They're edgy, but not over the top; they're traditional, but not old sounding.

While the title may suggest a more thematic type of recording; without really trying, I believe the Dills have put together a collection of songs that blatantly tells us a story about our life as a child of God. The Story of a Lifetime is that of struggles and triumphs, mercy and grace, worship and praise, life as it is today and the life that is to come and all things in between. All woven together into one musical tapestry, and sung as only the Dills can.

Bridgett starts things off with the up-tempo prayer in song, "AMAZING YOU" before Shawn blows the top off with the powerful song of praise entitled, "HOLY OF HOLIES", penned by Geron Davis. Tim steps up next to sing the upbeat, "I SEE A MOUNTAIN" before the pace slows down once again as LeeAnn sings the reflective, "I QUIT", penned by Ann Downing and Marty Funderburk.

Songwriting sensation Joseph Habedank and Matthew Holt penned the energetic "TIRED OF RUNNING" (is that Tim Dill I hear singing the bass part?). Habedank and Holt also penned another song included on this recording entitled, "HE GOT UP." Other noteworthy tunes include "YESTERDAY'S NEWS" and "I'M OVER WHAT'S UNDER THE BLOOD".

While their last release was definitely a good stretch for them, I feel this latest release is more true to who they are. Also, while this is a really great recording, there really isn't anything that makes me say WOW! There are some great songs, several which really stand out, but nothing that totally blows me away. Because I am such a huge fan of these guys, I set the bar very high for them. I still consider their 2006 release, Faith, to be their finest work and will probably continue to use that as my benchmark. Make no mistake, this an exceptional piece of work and is worthy is any praise given to it, I'm just still waiting for that 5 star recording that blows everything else the Dills have done out of the water.

The Dills are the about best group in Gospel Music today. They are what they sing. Truly a great christian family who loves the Lord and they don't mind telling you.

    God bless them,

    Shirely
