I’ve personally never heard of The Caltons, but it looks to me like they’re a family group. Family groups are pretty special to me, considering I travel and sing with my family’s group.
The first song on this project is, “One Of Those Days Lord”, written and led by Lisa Calton of the group. This is a medium tempo song. It is well written, and you can tell it came from a personal experience. Those type songs always make some of the best ones. The second song, “I Want To Be Like My Lord”, picks up the pace. Their bass singer leads this song and does a great job on it. This particular song really brings out the “southern” in Southern Gospel.
The next two songs were also written by Lisa. The first one is “Hold On To Your Faith”. This has a good faith-increasing message in it. It really speaks to the people. It’s a slow ballad type song. The title song, “Travelin’ In Style” comes next. The harmonies aren’t really blending on this one. This is not one of my favorites. Cut number five, “Let Your Fire Rain Down”, is one of those good, old Campmeeting style songs. This is a good worship song. There’s one part in the chorus where the high, ladies’ part is sticking out above the rest and just doesn’t seem to fit. It’s got some good music in it, and that organ in there really adds to the Campmeeting feel. Overall, it’s a good song.
“Place of Grace”, is next on the CD. Daryl Calton of the group wrote this song. This is a pretty ballad. The strings on this song are beautiful. The harmonies on this song are good. They’re blending better here than in any other song. The words are great. This is my favorite pick from the project. Cut number seven is, “The One”. This is your traditional Southern Gospel style song. There are some pitchy places. This was a good song selection for this project. It’s a good song with great words.
“Help Is On the Way”, is another song that Lisa Calton wrote. There’s a cool arrangement on this one. It breaks into double time towards the end and really pumps up the song. Good song. The next song is, “God In Me”. This has a medium/slow pace to it. It’s got a good message to it. “Thank You Lord”, slows things down a little bit more. This song thanks the Lord for what He did for us. You don’t hear enough songs that do that. I’m glad to hear a song like this on this project. Good choice guys. There’s a nice key change at the end that really makes the harmonies come together. The traditional, Martin’s style, “So High”, ends up the album. This is a good song to end up with. It leaves people on an upbeat note.
I give this project 3 ½ stars. There is room for improvement. There are some harmonies that need to be fixed, that can easily be corrected with practice. Plus, the more you sing together, the better your blend gets. There were some pitchy spots that also need to be corrected. Overall, this was a pretty good project, though. Keep up the good work guys!
