The Allens - “Back to One Cross”

Out of the state of Michigan comes a relatively new family group called The Allens (formerly known as One Heart). Vocally consisting of mother, daughter and son, Debbie, Kimberly and Steven Allen respectively, they definitely have the family harmony down pat. Vocally, their sound is not overbearing at all, and is easy on the ears.

Opening the CD is one of the prettiest songs I have heard in awhile called “LET HIM TOUCH YOU.” Written by Rodney Griffin, excellent harmonies on this song make it a definite highlight! Another highlight is the inclusion of “HE DID IT JUST FOR ME” featuring the young Steven Allen. Written by Dr. Jerry Goff, the Allens do a good job on this song, as well as another Jerry Goff penned tune, “MAYBE ONE MORE DAY.” (Which is also the group’s current single release). I was thrilled to see them include the classic Kyla Rowland song from the late 1970’s; “HE WILL ROLL YOU OVER THE TIDE.” One song that bears mentioning is another Rodney Griffin penned song called “BACK TO ONE CROSS.” Great singing and great message make this song worth listening to.

The Allens have excellent harmony and good voices; the only thing they may lack is a little punch in their vocals. Vocally and musically there really aren’t any holes to speak of, with the exception that their singing is somewhat soft. I know in Southern Gospel, many times, is all blood and guts, just open up and let’er fly. But sometimes, some softer Southern Gospel is good for you once in awhile!
