Tammy Trout – Suddenly

Producer: Michael Sykes/Anthony Trout

Tammy Trout is an amazing vocalist who is a cross between MaDonna McFall (formerly of the McFalls) and Karen Harding but with just a hint of Marietta Wolfe (Lanny Wolfe Trio) thrown in the mix. Tammy is a very commanding singer that makes you sit up and take notice. This is my introduction to her music, and what a grand introduction it is!

With a bit of retro funk “BEST FRIEND” starts the recording off before moving on to, “JESUS IS THE ANSWER”. Both of these songs sound very much like something Lanny Wolfe would have done in the late 1970's and early 1980's and Tammy performs them flawlessly.

There are several songs on this recording that fall into the Praise & Worship vein of the musical spectrum. “I LOVE TO WORSHIP YOU”, the Alvin Slaughter classic “SUDDENLY”, the hard driving “I AM BLESSED” (I LOVE this song) and the worshipful “YOUR WORD” are all very good songs and actually provide some of the most memorable moments on this recording.

Southern Gospel Music has always had its share of sappy ‘mama songs'; but I'll bet you've never heard a mama song quite like “PRAYIN' GIRL”. This mama song rocks! You'll either love it or hate it, and I LOVE it!

The reflective, “JOURNEYS HERE AT HOME” provide a really neat perspective on life and how sad it would be to travel the world and see all of its marvels, and yet somehow miss the wonderful journeys we can take, right in our own home and with the ones that we love most.

With an interesting inclusion of the James Taylor classic “SHOWER THE PEOPLE ”, Tammy really does an outstanding job on the song and it was really neat hearing this song again. I think James Taylor would be very pleased with this cut.

The strong blues sound of “I GOT IT ALL” is my least favorite on this recording and though it really shows off Tammy in a different dimension than the other offerings on here, it's not her strongest performance.

“I COUNT IT JOY” is the big power ballad on this recording and Tammy does a spectacular job on the song, before closing out with “BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN” which is a reflective prayer in song that, in a way, poses a question we all must answer…what have we done today that was pleasing to the Lord? Did we help our neighbor, did we live with love and grace, did we do all we could do make this life worth living? The thought provoking message will linger with you.

Soaring vocals, kickin' music tracks, stellar arrangements and solid songs are only but a few reasons why this is such a great recording. In researching some of her earlier music, this recording far surpasses any of her former works. Her other stuff is great, but this new recording sets a new standard for Tammy.

Tammy isn't your run-of-the-mill Southern Gospel recording artist. Her style is somewhat Southern Gospel, but she blends it with Inspirational and CCM, and with a lot of soul. She takes each song and makes it her own and she makes you listen. Not everyone will like this recording because she does cross the line somewhat musically, but I loved it and as an old saying goes, ‘If I like it, it MUST be Southern Gospel!” This definitely is one of my favorite recordings that I have heard for 2005.

Personal Favs: JESUS IS THE ANSWER; PRAYIN' GIRL; SUDDENLY; I AM BLESSED; YOUR WORD; I COUNT IT JOY; BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN

This is a great project but the only comparrison to Madonna and Karen is that all three of these ladies have an obvious annointing and they are outstanding at what they do. Tammy however is in a league of her own.

Kevin you are so right, Tammy is in a league of her own. I think the blues song, I"VE GOT IT ALL is one of the best that I have heard.
Can't wait to see her again.
