This project starts things off with a song titled, “Gone Long Gone”. The beginning of the song is done acapella. When the music comes in, it’s an upbeat song. I’m assuming Steve Hess is one of the group members. It looks like he writes most of the material for the group. This group is a male trio. I love the fiddle on the track. The baritone part is not mixed in as well as the other two parts. It seems real distant. It could stand to come up some. The next song, “God Can”, is written by Steve, as well. The tempo is medium paced. The tenor part exceeds the other two parts. The mix, again, should had been fixed on here. There are some good words to this song. At the end, the lead should have been louder. All I can hear are the two harmonies.
“One Of These Mornings” is cut number three. It’s another upbeat song. There’s a pretty good mix on this one. This song and the next, are both written by Steve Hess. I like the three note climb at the end. Good song. Next is, “I’ll See Jesus”. This one slows the pace down to a ballad. This is a song about what we’ll see when we get to Heaven. I like how they ended it on a high note. That was nice. Another good song. The “I’ll Fly Away Medley”, is number five on the CD. This is a fast one. It starts off with the traditional, “I’ll Fly Away”. Whoever they got to play fiddle on this project, is an excellent musician. They go out of “I’ll Fly Away” to “Goodbye World Goodbye”. They have good harmonies on “Goodbye World Goodbye” and “Power In The Blood”, which is the next song in the medley. They go back to “I’ll Fly Away” to end up the song.
The next two songs, “I Had My Hand On You” and “Well Done” are two more songs written by Steve Hess. “I Had My Hand On You” is a slow song. The first verse has a weird chord progression in it. It works, though. I love the words of this song. It’s a good comfort song. I think repeating the line, “before you new your name” three times in the first chorus was a little much. I would have saved that for the end. I like the big key change at the bridge. That gave this song some spunk. “Well Done” keeps things kind of at a slow/medium pace. This is what I call a “thinker” song. It will definitely make you take a closer look at your life and make sure you’re doing things right. Great message, especially in this day and age. The ending was a little blunt.
Cut number eight is “The Old Gospel Ship”. This picks things back up. This is a well-known song that used to be sang a lot, back a few years ago. At the key change, the guy that takes the lead there, seems to be struggling a little bit. I’m not sure if he’s trying too hard or if it’s just out of his range. “The Cross Medley” starts off acapella. The first couple lines are a little pitchy, and cutoffs aren’t all together. There were some cool moves in there, though. The tenor went a little too high right towards the end of the song and caused that third part to be lost. The project ends with “Soldier In The Lord’s Army”. Steve also wrote this song. It ends things with an upbeat, medium/fast tempo. This is a good, “head-bobber” song. I like it.
Throughout the entire project, the mix was a little off. Whoever mixed this project should have double checked it before releasing it. There’s just not a great blend. Some of the harmonies were missing on different lines of different songs. Overall, the songs are good, and I think the harmonies would be good, if I could hear all of them mixed properly together. I give the project 2 1/2 stars. Good job guys. Keep up the good work!
