Songs Of The Century - “Country’s 20 Classic Gospel”

Producer: Ken Harding
Label: New Haven Records
Website: www.newhavenrecords.com www.countrymusichalloffame.com

This newest release from New Haven Records is a real gem. Though I have never really followed the gospel side of Country music very closely, I do know Gospel and Country Music have many times crossed paths and has even traveled along side one another many times, and hopefully will continue to do so. This collection of great songs superbly recorded by some of the true legends of Country Music is a real treasure.

One thing I found unique is the order of songs. They start from the most recent recording (1994) and generally take us down memory lane backwards to the 1930s. The CD booklet is a wonderful source of info for background information on each song and artist. Anyone who is interested in an historical look at the Gospel of Country Music should get this CD. I know the review is short…but what more can be said? It's a real treasure.

Here is the song list:

"I KNOW WHO HOLD TOMORROW" (Allison Krause & the Cox Family)
"GO REST HIGH ON THAT MOUNTAIN" (Vince Gill)
"FARTHER ALONG" (Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt & Dolly Parton)
"CHILDREN GO WHERE I SEND THEE" (Ricky Skaggs)
"PRECIOUS MEMORIES" (Tammy Wynette w/ Masters V)
"UNCLOUDY DAY" (Willie Nelson)
"AMAZING GRACE" (Statler Brothers)
"COAT OF MANY COLORS" (Dolly Parton)
"PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HAND/JESUS HOLD MY HAND" (Merle Haggard)
"HOW GREAT THOU ART" (Connie Smith)
"WERE YOU THERE" (Johnny Cash)
"CRYING IN THE CHAPEL"
(Elvis Presley)
"WINGS OF A DOVE" (Ferlin Huskey)
"LIFE'S RAILWAY TO HEAVEN" (Patsy Cline)
"IN THE GARDEN" (Jim Reeves)
"THE OLD RUGGED CROSS" ( Tennessee Ernie Ford)
"PEACE IN THE VALLEY" (Red Foley w/ the Sunshine Boys)
"ANGEL BAND" ( Stanley Brothers)
"CAN THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN" (Carter Family)
"I SAW THE LIGHT" (Hank Williams)

A great CD! If you think that the Crabb family is progressive check out Johnny Cash on "Were You There". THAT was a daring song for the times. A great treasure of music!

I listened to this once and it became my favorite of all time. Great songs, great artists - what a great blessing to hear it.
