Ron Block - Doorway

Producer: Ron Block
Record Label: Rounder Records
Website: http://www.ronblock.com

Fans of Southern Gospel music probably aren’t as familiar with Ron Block as fans of country and bluegrass music are. Block has been touring the country market for over 15 years as the guitarist/banjoist/vocalist/songwriter and more of Alison Krauss & Union Station - one of country and bluegrass music’s most popular vocal ensembles and bands. Ron is now releasing his sophomore solo outing on indie label Rounder Records which is also the home to artists like Alison Krauss & Union Station, Bruce Cockburn, John Waite, Madeline Peyroux, Rhonda Vincent, The Grascals, and many more. Those afraid of the country or bluegrass market need not fear too much - as Ron Block showcases a sampling of styles such as bluegrass, folk, inspirational, country, and more. Vocally, Block recalls the likes of Andrew Peterson - one of Christian music’s finest artists. Musically - he’s a cross between Peterson, Fernando Ortega, Alison Krauss & Union Station and the lighter sides of newcomers Austins Bridge. This recording features some of the finest musicianship around - and for that alone it is worth looking into. His bluegrass picking is top notch, but his melodies on the more folk oriented songs are also worth nothing. DoorWay features songs about faith and family - nestled sweetly on the border of Christian and country music. Block is definitely not ashamed to share his faith on this album - especially on tunes like “Be Assured” which speaks of explaining one’s faith or the Godly-love inspired “The Kind of Love.” He also speaks of God’s complexity through His workings ("Things Aren’t Always As They Seem"), trusting Him in all circumstances ("DoorWay") , and humbleness before God ("The Blackness of the Need"). There’s no denying that Ron is a man of God and a true light in a dark world. DoorWay is a very strong entry into the Christian market as well as the country/bluegrass market.
