Poet Voices - Worship focus One

Producer: Phil Cross/Cliff Duren
Label: Independent Release
Website: http://www.poetvoices.com

It seems that over the course of the last 10-15 years, Praise & Worship music has taken root in the hearts of literally thousands upon thousands (dare I say millions?) of believers and even non-believers. Over time, we've seen that genre seep into Southern Gospel music, and whatever side of the fence you're on (for or against), it's here to stay. There are only a few artists who can carry themselves into that genre, and Poet Voices is one of them. In this latest release, Phil Cross, Mark Lanier and Greg Crowe have assembled a mishmash of differing P&W tunes that will assist those desiring to enter into worship, to do so.

Poet Voices turn in their own renditions of recent CCM and P&W tunes like "WHO AM I?" (Casting Crowns), "ABOVE ALL" (Michael W. Smith) as well as some classic ones including "TRADING MY SORROWS", the Keith Green classic, "THERE IS A REDEEMER", "YOUR GRACE AMAZES ME" (Phillips, Craig & Dean). They also blend a few tunes together creating a montage of songs like "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY MEDLEY" which includes "We Fall Down", "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "Holy, Holy" and "FRIEND MEDLEY" which blends "Big, Big God" and "Friend of God". Phil Cross even lent one of his own songs, "BEFORE YOU KNEW HOW TO LOVE ME" which closes out the recording on a memorable note.

As I stated earlier, not every Southern Gospel group is adept to doing P&W music, but it works very well with Poet Voices' style. As a whole, most songs worked well for them, with just a few that just didn't seem to fit them, but even still, they managed to pull them off with dignity. This isn't a "Wow, this is an awesome recording" type of thing, but it's a good piece of work. Praise & Worship has never quite been my forte', but this recording is good. It's probably not for everyone, and though it may not make its way to my CD player as often as other Poet Voices recordings have, it's a good, solid project nonetheless.

I listen to this porject and I didn't like it. Wonder if this project was a flop for Poet Voices? I see that Mark and Greg are no longer with Poet Voices.
