New Vision Trio - Goin’ To Heaven

Label: Capitol Enterprises
Producer: John D. Rowsey
Website: www.newvisiontrio.com
Song Titles: “Wait Upon The Lord,” “How To Fight The Devil,” “Mamaw And Me,” “Goin To Heaven,” “Oh Please Help Me Jesus,” “Just Can't Wait,” “Just Ask Him,” “What A Day Of Celebration,” “Fresh Breeze,” and “Little Is Much”

Goin' To Heaven features eight songs written by New Vision Trio member Judy Sexton with another original by Arnold Sexton . The tenth tune (“Little Is Much”) was written by producer John Darin Rowsey , Niles Borop , and Amy Keffer' Shellem .

This project could be improved in a few areas. The biggest trait I noticed was inconsistency. The songwriting quality is hit and miss. A few of the songs are  pretty good, though. The best original track contributed by a group member is “Oh, Please Help Me Jesus,” featuring the trio's soprano who has a very nice tone quality with an expressive delivery.

Inconsistency is also noticeable in the production quality. The piano stands out on “Just Can't Wait” with an exciting and complex solo, for example, but the  " brass " parts hamper “Goin' To Heaven” and “Just Ask Him.” On “Little Is Much” (and a few other tracks), it appears some additional background vocalists are singing along with the trio though none are credited in the liner notes.

It seems like an effort was made to make each song sound different from the others which is good for variety, but there's no real thematic consistency for this project as a whole. There's also an uneven quality with to the vocals. The strongest tracks on Goin' To Heaven are those featuring the soprano. She would sound great as a soloist or in a group  with other vocalists who are more  compatible with  her style of singing.

Ouch! That is a pretty rough review! You really need to see and hear this group in person. Sometimes the chemistry doesn't come thru the recording like that of a live performance which is unfortunate. I have listened to this group over several years and have watched them grow with a variety of personnel. Believe me this group "is" and "sounds great" and well worth listening to. There's no doubt in my mind..."they are ready for primetime"!
