New Speer Revival - “Carrying on the Tradition”

2002/GTS Records

After 4 years of silence, the voice of the Speer Family is silent no longer.  In true Speer fashion, Marc Speer has put together a group that is proudly carrying on the tradition set forth by his grandparents, Tom (G.T.) and Lena, better known as Dad and Mom Speer.  Their sound is very reminiscent of the Chuck Wagon Gang and the old Speer Family sound of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, partly because the songs included on this CD are from that era, partly because they were very conscious and worked hard to preserve that style of gospel, and partly because of the voice of alto singer, Karen Apple.  If there was ever a voice that was made to sing Speer Family music, it is that of former Speer Family vocalist, Karen Apple.  She was born to be a Speer, and it is great to hear her back singing with this Speer reincarnation.  I don’t mean to spotlight one particular singer, but in my opinion she really makes the groups sound.  Despite doting over Karen Apple, there are 3 other members of the group who are vital in recreating that Speer sound, Marc Speer, Rick Moore and Kimber Manning.

Featuring mostly classic Speer family songs, some written by Dad Speer, they really do well reviving such songs as, “O IT THRILLS ME”, “DIG A LITTLE DEEPER IN GOD’S LOVE”, “I WON’T TURN BACK”, “I KNOW MY SAVIOR CARES FOR ME”, “SOME GLAD DAY” and “SWEETER EACH DAY” (the addition of Ben, Faye, Mary Tom and Rosa Nell Speer as a Speer choir makes this song all the more sweeter.)

Other classic songs include, “‘TIL THE STORM PASSES BY”, “MIRACLES WILL HAPPEN ON THAT DAY”, “I CAN CALL ON JESUS ANYTIME” and “DANIEL PRAYED.”  I really wish they included such songs as “I Never Shall Forget the Day”, “Heaven will Surely Be Worth it All”, “I’m Bound for that City”, “Sunset is Coming”, “The Dearest Friend I Ever Had” or “Heaven’s Jubilee.”  But, I am sure they will record again and hopefully these songs will be considered then.

You won’t find any bold or brassy arrangements or anything like that on this CD.  What New Speer Revival offers is flat-footed singing with simple musical arrangements.  To some people, this may sound boring, but this is gospel music the way it was…simple and down-to-earth.  It’s kinda nice, isn’t it?
