It's been about 2 years since the Nelons have released a mainline recording. Produced by Lari Goss, the Nelons really have a first rate sounding recording. Goss always seems to be able to bring out the best in an artist, and he brought out the best in the Nelons. Stellar music and vocal arrangements run dominant throughout the recording and this could be the finest offering from the group since their “Following After” release from Daywind back about 5 years ago.
An acapella arrangement of the classic hymn, “CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY” starts the recording off before things quickly move on to the upbeat, “I'M ON MY WAY”. This is a highly enjoyable song and has done quite well for the group on the charts.
With no musical introduction, Jason quickly declares in the song “ALL THAT MATTERS” that “if I could say but one thing, it would be He's the best thing…for He really is all the matters.” Featuring an odd meter to the song, it also features Kelly and Amber before all is said done.
Kelly turns in a masterful performance on the power anthem, “IT IS THE CAUSE” before things move on to the highly energetic, “MY, MY, MY”. I wouldn't consider this to be the most deeply written song, but sometimes we do come to a place where the Spirit of the Lord is so rich, all you can say is, “My, my, my…I know it's real!”
Amber does a good job with the ballad, “NOTHING CAN KEEP US FROM GOD'S LOVE” before things move on to the uptempo, “BELIEVE IT OR NOT”, which is one of highlights on this recording for me. The tune will stick with you and you'll probably find yourself hitting the repeat button with this one too. Cool ending too. The power ballad, “WE NEED THE LORD” slows things down again as Jason sings, “we don't more confusion, from man's theology, we don't need more division, caused from philosophies, we don't need another program, to live a better life…we need the Lord.” The song has that old Nelons sound that they are known for and will no doubt be a favorite of many.
The country flavored “ANYTHING LIKE JESUS” featuring all three members of the group, and ends with an acapella chorus before the recording moves on to the upbeat, “GONNA HAVE A MEETIN'”.
Closing things out is the song “I KNOW I WAS BLIND”, which recounts the story of the blind made to see and applying it to our own lives.
As I said earlier, Lari Goss weaves his magic throughout the recording with cool musical arrangements, lush orchestrations and outstanding vocal arrangements. I think where the recording falls short for me is one, the lack of a bass singer. Their sound is thin without a bass and I miss the sound they had with a bass. Two, the lyrical content could be better. With all the songs coming from only three writers (David Hill, Micah Henson and primarily Jason Clark) the songs tend to sound the same and lyrically, run very similar. But on a high note, Amber is really turning into quite a singer, just like her mom! Both just get better with age. (No pun intended!)
Personal Favs: I'M ON MY WAY; BELIEVE IT OR NOT; WE NEED THE LORD; ANYTHING LIKE JESUS
