McKameys - The Old Path

Producer:  Jeff Collins/Roger Fortner
Label:  Horizon Records
Website:  www.mckameys.com

Since the early 1980’s, this family has been making its mark on Southern Gospel Music with their unique style of singing and has won the hearts of thousands upon thousands of people.  This latest offering, The Old Path, will no doubt be enjoyed by the legions of fans that enjoy their music.  While I would never call them great singers, the emotional quality and down to earth feel of their music draws many people, including myself, to their music.  While this won’t draw many new fans, their many loyal fans definitely will enjoy it.

The recording starts off with the campmeeting flavor of the uptempo, “JESUS IS WITH ME EVERYWHERE I GO” before moving on the heartfelt tune, “HE HEARS MY TEARS”, which features an exceptional performance by Carol.

Many of the songs on this recording reflect back to an old fashioned theme and Ruben is featured on one of those songs entitled, “THAT’S HOW I GOT SAVED”.  Other songs that fall along similar themes are “THE OLD STREAM” and the acapella closing tune, “LET US GO BACK”.

Connie is featured on the victorious “RESURRECTION MORN” (which was written by her sister, Sheryl), as well as the Kyla Rowland penned tune, “I KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT GOD’S GRACE”.

I remember hearing Peg testify in a concert several years that Christ was the “altogether lovely one” and that jubilant testimony has always stuck with after all these years (probably about 15 years ago) and I had often wondered if she’d ever find a song with that theme.  Well she finally got one with the song, “ALTOGETHER LOVELY” and it is one of the best offerings from this recording.

Carol renders yet another excellent performance on the medium tempo, “I WILL TRUST YOU LORD”, while Connie and Roger’s son, Elijah is featured on an old McKameys tune from over a dozen years ago called, “I AM A SOLDIER TODAY”, penned by Debra Shepherd.  Backed by Connie and Roger, Elijah does a good job on the song.  Before the recording winds down, we come to the uptempo, “OH WHAT MIRACLES GOD CAN DO”.

Through the years, the McKameys have released some really great recordings, and some good recordings.  This is a good recording.  The McKameys have always had a wonderful knack for finding great songs, and this recording is no exception.  But, I felt they had much stronger material on their previous release, Fresh Manna . Don’t get me wrong, there are some great songs on here, I just felt their last recording was stronger and better.  But, to the many other fans of the McKameys, they will no doubt find a lot to enjoy here.

Personal Favs:   HE HEARS MY TEARS; THE OLD STREAM; ALTOGETHER LOVELY; I WILL TRUST YOU LORD

This CD is a great one. I think it is one of their best to date. They ARE great singers. I am in the younger generation. I'm in my twenties, so, yes, they are STILL drawing new fans. The McKameys are some of the most humble people you'll meet. They are real when they sing. When they sing you can tell that they aren't doing it for the money, they are doing it for the LORD!

I too and in my 20's and love the Mckameys dearly. They have that down to earth sound, and dont seem to be trying to be like everyone wants them to be. But they are just like GOD wants them.
