McKameys - Telling the Story

Producer: Jeff Collins/Roger Fortner
Label: Horizon
Website: http://www.mckameysonline.com

Known for their simple, down home, country style, the McKameys have cultivated themselves a very strong following and have remained one of the most consistent and successful groups in Southern Gospel Music. Very few groups can boast the success the McKameys have had. After they exploded on the scene in the mid 1980s, song after song, album after album they have endeared themselves into the hearts of countless people. This latest release continues what they started many years ago, and offers very little in the way of surprises for those who enjoy their music.

The recording starts out with the old hymn, "MY JESUS, I LOVE THEE", which is done in the McKameys inimitable style before Eli (Roger & Connie's son) steps up to sing the uptempo, "IT TAKES TIME", and the little guy does a good job, and the song packs a very good message.

One of the best songs on this recording is "YOU ARE WITH ME", which features Peg. Though, musically, a little different for the McKameys, it works very well for them and is a highlight of the recording. Another highlight is the uptempo, "SWEET VICTORY", which features Connie.

As the pace slows down, Carol steps up to sing a song simply titled, "SECRETS", written by Ruben & Peg's daughter Sheryl. I have always loved the emotional quality of Carol's voice, as she remains my favorite singer in the group, and the song fits Carol like a glove.

Ruben steps up to the mic for, "SING A SONG ABOUT THE LAMB" before Peg steps up and turns in an excellent performance on their first single from the recording, "YOU'RE STILL GOD". Just as Peg exuberantly proclaimed almost 20 years while singing/recording their signature song "God on the Mountain", she, along with the rest of the group, are still proclaiming in song, "You're still God, when my eyes have cried a million tears. You're still God, when my last hope has disappeared. You're still God, and I know You'll make a way somehow. You're still God, and You're holding me right now."

Connie turns in one of her best performances on another excellent song of comfort and faith, "WAIT FOR THE MORNING LIGHT" before Peg picks the pace back up once again with the tune, "IT'S ALL GOOD". Carol closes things out with the Dan Keeton (Dixie Melody Boys) penned, "TELLING THE OLD STORY", which was also recorded by the Wilburns a few years back.

From a personal perspective, I wouldn't say that this is my favorite recording by the McKameys. I consider "Fresh Manna" (2004) and "Waiting" (2000) to be their best offerings in recent years. But for their style and the expectations I have set in regards to their music, it's a very good recording; and while for the most part, the McKameys recordings generally offer no musical surprises, it's their sincerity and consistency that their fans love and appreciate anyway. While their style isn't particularly a favorite of mine, I have the highest respect for the McKameys as artists and as people. They're blessed, and it's obvious that their music is a great blessing to countless others; and this recording will follow suit with the music they have released in the past.

Personal Favs: YOU ARE WITH ME; SWEET VICTORY; SECRETS; YOU'RE STILL GOD; WAIT FOR THE MORNING LIGHT

    Hello,
I love hearing you guys sing. I get a blessing everytime. I have been singing your songs for a very long time. My family has a little group and they sing "God Of The Mountian" and all of that and I picked it up from them. But keep up the great work. The Lord has truley blessed you. God Bless.

Driving down a country road in early summer, lilacs, spit-rail fences....the sunroof open.. the McKameys on the Ipod and a Starbucks Frappuccino...it doesn't get much better than this....another gem from the McKameys.
