Jonathan Pierce - For You

image Label: Curb Records/Word Records
Producers: Gary Miller and Graham Stack for Brian Rawling Productions, Billy Mann, Michael Bolton and Steve Rosen

Jonathan Pierce. His name is synonomous with big voiced power ballads. He made his name starting out with the Imperials, and later with a stint as the tenor of the Gaither Vocal Band. Pierce released his first solo album in 1996 with One Love, and he followed that up with 2 more inspirational heavy solo albums. Pierce is known for his dynamic voice, which has earned him three nominations for Male Vocalist of the Year at the Dove Awards. On For You, his fourth album for Curb Records, Pierce finds himself in a different place as an artist. Pierce is no longer just a singer. He’s an actor, TV host, and family man. So it’s no wonder that Pierce’s latest offering has topics that range from earthly relationships to heavenly things. The album touches on topics such as love between a husband and wife (“Serendipity”, “Whenever I” and “Still the Love of My Life”), living our lives for Christ (“Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot”, “Go In Peace” and “For You”). Pierce also wrote “Love Will Happen” for Mercy Ministries, a ministry founded in order to help unwed mothers and teens. “Everlasting Love” and “Flying Without Wings” are inspirational ballads meant to encourage the church. Musically, the album is straight up adult pop fare. “Serendipity” and “Still the Love of My Life” have mainstream pop potential with their catchy hooks and radio friendly accesibility. “Life, Love and Happiness” and “For You” both dive into techo/dance areas, while “Whenever I” and “Go In Peace” are your typical christian radio types. Pierce has always been known for his power ballads, and he doesn’t disappoint on this record. “Run to You”, the albums biggest ballad, shows Pierce in top form as a vocalist, as well as other ballads like “Flying Without Wings” and “Everlasting Love”. It’s nice to see Pierce stretching himself, and he mainly does that vocally on this album, trying new things and testing the waters in other avenues, most notably in “Still the Love of My Life” and “Serendipity”. It will be a sad day if fans don’t support this album, because For You will be a career defining album for Jonathan Pierce.

I know this isn't your typical album reviewed here, but Pierce does have a substantial SG fanbase from his days with the GVB. Surely, someone else has heard this phenominal pop record.

Is it just my imagination or has anyone else noticed the resemblance between Jonathan Pierce and Stephen Curtis Chapman? Personally, I think they're the same person trying to capitalize on two different styles of Gospel music. Has anyone ever seen the two of them together? I think not.

James Hales's avatar The first time I saw Jonathan's pic with the GVB I thought the same thing. He does resemble SSC, I think.

James Hales's avatar Chris...you know you can't always have the right opinion right? Well, this is one of those times!

As a songwriter, all around performer, etc., Chapman certainly has the edge . . . but with singing ability alone, I'd have to go with Pierce.

w00t! See, David agrees with me, and we all know that doesn't happen much.

i went to hear jonathan with 4him in atlanta on their new record release tour and he was great. I sat on the front row and watched him deliver a near flawless performance. He is a great artist and the new record is incredible.

I think the project is the best yet from JP . He is a Great person also and lives what he sings , thats worth it all....P.S. JP is an awesome song writer , just a different style than Stephen Curtis . SSC needs to write and let JP do the singing ...

I've been following JP since his last couple years in the GVB. I think he is by far one of the best Christian artists there is. His voice is amazing and his style is perfect. I wish he was more well known, it's really a shame that he doesn't get more radio play. I'm forever a JP fan.

JP is my idol. The best voice there is. What's the latest on him?
