Forgiven - God Is Greater

Producer: John Darrin Rowsey
Song Titles: "God Is Greater," "The One Who Knows The Way," "For God So Loved," "Just In Time," "Just In Time," "I Can Call Jesus Anytime," "Who Am I," "Footprints Of Jesus," "The Shepherd Left Heaven For Me," "This I Know," "I'll Never Be Lonely Again," "In The Depths Of The Sea," and "Sweet, Sweet Spirit"

God Is Greater is a collection of mostly cover songs. The production quality on this project is good, and vocals are executed confidently by Forgiven , a trio consisting of Cloid Baker , Debbie Baker , and Doug Sharp . This group can sing with power, but they also have a compatible blend.

Although I have no major complaints about this CD, I noticed some areas that could be tweaked a bit. The accompaniment relies too much on keyboard substitutions for real instruments. It's very noticeable in spots such as the intro to "In The Depths Of The Sea." There's also a particularly cheesy sounding brass patch that pops up in several songs. When I consider that is an independently produced project, though, I'm impressed by the overall quality in the instrumentation and vocal performances.

The best tracks on God Is Greater include the Jim Hill song "For God So Loved," the mid-tempo 1950s influenced stylings on "I'll Never Be Lonely Again," and "The One Who Knows The Way." The a cappella version of "Sweet, Sweet Spirit" that closes out the project is also a highlight.

Forgiven is comfortable singing within a nice range of styles, and they put their own vocal mark on each track. This project goes a long way towards establishing a recognizable sound for the group. It shows they have great potential for the future, because the core quality of the singers is evident. All that remains is for them to get more refined music tracks the next time out (easier said than done), and add more original songs in the future. These two steps would permit their vocal sound to stand on its own and be noticed by more fans in the future.

I met Forgiven at NQC last year and our friendship has continued to grow. The one thing that caught my attention was their smooth harmonies and vocal style. Get use to the name. Forgiven will be around for a long time.

James Hales's avatar I heard their last CD, and it sounds this one runs very similar with it. They do have a very smooth sound, and I remain impressed with them vocally. I would like to see them do a little better with their recordings though.
