Doug Anderson - Signature Sound Quartet

Doug Anderson - Signature Sound Quartet

The Sum Of The Parts

What makes a group special? You can point to different groups and come up with different answers. However, any group is the sum of its parts. So, we wanted to start a series of articles to let you meet each member of different groups. This month we start with Signature Sound Quartet.

Signature Sound Quartet burst on the scene. In its first year, the group landed a top-ten single with its debut song, "Old Time Christian Way." They also earned themselves a total of three awards during the National Quartet Convention, including Singing News Fan Awards for Horizon Group of the Year and Favorite Tenor (Ernie Haase), as well as the Gospel Diamond's Impact award.

Singing Baritone for Signature Sound is Doug Anderson. The baritone part is extremely important to any blend, and Doug certainly gives his all to making the sound of Signature Sound excellent.

Doug grew up singing with his parent's group. They traveled for years from their home church in Anderson. Doug also remembers what a big part music played in their lives, and how they used to sing around the piano at home.

As Doug grew up and went to college, he got involved in sports, but admits, "My love was always singing." He tried out for a group called "The Fishermen Quartet" and joined the group. He then sang with a group called "Lighthouse" for about 6 years. In fact, Doug, as well as Signature Sound's current keyboard artist, Roy Webb, and sound man, David Griffith were all members of Lighthouse. They all met Ernie when Lighthouse did dates with Ernie.

In addition to having a family group, Doug has a rich heritage of Southern Gospel growing up listening to The Happy Goodmans, The Hinsons, The Speers, and, of course, The Cathedrals.

When he's not on the road with Signature Sound, Doug enjoys his family. He and his wife, Michele, have two daughters; Isabelle, 2, and Emma, 7 weeks old as we talked. "Our main goal when I'm home is to do things as a family," Doug tells. He says wife Michele is his best friend. "I love sports, she loves sports. We have always got along." Doug is definitely a family man. "Whether we are playing, throwing or playing catch, going to a ball game, going out to eat, going to get ice cream, or whatever; Family time is important in our home. It's a non-stop even when I'm at home."

Doug is excited about the future of Southern Gospel, too. "We've had a lot of great people who built the foundation of this industry, and shown us how to do it, and the way it's supposed to be done. Now, they've turned it over to us. It's our turn to make sure that it keeps on going. I think there's a lot of young groups coming up to do that, and are going to do it the right way. The talent is very, very good. And I think Signature Sound is one of those to step in. Putting me aside, Ernie has had great teaching. He's learned from the best, George Younce, He's first class. As far as I'm concerned, he's one of the best in the business. Ernie is a first class gentleman. I'm proud to call him my friend."

Well, it's not hard to "Amen" that! Signature Sound has taken the hearts of Southern Gospel fans everywhere. And Doug Anderson is a big part of that. He gives 110% every time he walks on stage. Doug is a great guy, just to talk to, too. Now that you know him a little better, be sure to speak to him at the record table the next time they're singing close to you.

Believe me, all the members of SSQ are just as genuine and real and full of devotion as Doug Anderson. They represent the God we serve in a most reverant and respectable manner. When they're not singing, they're off-stage continuing to minister to those that come to share in their services. How many never forget a name or a face? Doug sure doesn't!! wink

 I AMEN the earlier lady, Pam, who said that Doug Anderson is the epitome of Class! Class, not only in unique clothes and hairstyle :light: (much like Ernie! :ha: ) but, more importantly...Class in the way he presents Jesus, vocally  as well as in his showmanship and personality. smile This is a Standard of Excellence that Signature Sound Quartet has overall!

As a Pastor friend of his, it's been awesome to see Doug grow in the Grace and Knowledge of our Lord...having the love and joy of Jesus everywhere he goes! One of things I appreciate about singers like Doug is that he truly sings his heart out to 150 people, as much as he does to 15,000! Great Baritone singers usually supply the "meat" of any quartet, however, they aren't usually recognized as much as the other parts. I do believe, however, that Doug Anderson will change that! God bless you, Bob, and keep the Christ honoring articles coming!

Did any of you see SSQ on TBN Network! I think they encored "Stand By Me" three times!!!. That was my first time to hear the new lead singer and he really impressed me with the maturity of his voice. Great tone and range (I feel like Randy on American Idol). Anywhoo, great article for a great group!

Doug is one of the finest baritones I have ever heard. I went to hear them and the conquerors one night north of Evansville, IN. I told Doug that night he reminded me of Doy Ott. He had a puzzled look on his face, and one of the guys told him "he just paid you a great compliment." Don't ya just hate young-uns? smile
