Slowly and surely, duets have been making a bit of a mark on the Southern Gospel community. Thanks to acts like Aaron & Amanda Crabb, Young Harmony, and CrossWay - other acts like Wendy Word + forgiven, Hearts of Faith, and now Dale & Cheryl Golden have been able to establish themselves as leaders in the industry as well.
Dale & Cheryl have released their latest album - It's Time. It's Time is an album full of ministry driven songs with a more inspirational Southern sound as opposed to the current country trend in the industry.
The album starts off with the infectious up-tempo "Hear the Sound" before going into the stirring ballad "Land of Peaceful Healing." Cheryl has a nice, peaceful and understated voice - and she does a great job on the ballads. It's not the kind of voice that will knock your socks off, but she has a beautiful tone and character to her voice (similar to the likes of Janet Paschal or Lily Isaacs). "Better Than I Asked" is another ballad that features this nice vocal.
The album kicks back into gear with the more traditional Southern sound of "Drawn Out" that features a knock out vocal performance from Dale. "I Will Give Praise" has a more church-music sound with its worship oriented lyric. "The Glory to Come" is another rousing, radio friendly number that features a guest vocal by Ricky Atkinson. Atkinson also shows up on the title cut "It's Time."
All of the songs on It's Time were penned by Dale Golden - and he's definitely got a talent in that area. However, the album could have used a bit more variety, and utilizing different writers would have benefited the album greatly. Also - a lack of several strong up tempo songs really brought the album down a notch. The canned strings used on several tracks also brought the feel down a bit.
Overall, It's Time is a fine release from this rising talent. They have a nice sound, and this release is most definitely a step above their past releases.
