It was my first time to hear Crimson Gold, but I have a feeling it won’t be my last. Opening with “Come Out of the Wilderness,” a tune written by group member and producer Dave Williford, the album automatically grabs your attention. Most of the songs on this record are written by one or more of the group members, and “Mission for the Cross” is no exception. Not only are the songs lyrically and melodically strong, Crimson Gold sings them well. The group has a traditional sound that’s clean and energetic. “When We Worship the Lamb” features Ray Reese, the tenor of the group.
“Glorytown” has some bluegrass undertones, while still maintaining its quartet feel and features bass singer and co-producer, Kent Mathes. Lead singer, Gary O’Neal has a strong smooth tone, that I could hear crossing over into other genres as well. He has some country tinges and a slightly progressive tone that really makes the group’s sound. “Home Free” features baritone, J.D. Wagner. The piano playing on this project is great. The group travels with a full band. Dave Williford as previously mentioned plays piano for the group and also played on the project.
The big ballad, “Which Cross,” is a highlight of the record, followed by “Sing and Shout,” an up tempo number that quickly became one of my favorites. The last two cuts “Sinner saved by Grace,” and “John the Revelator” were the only two songs on the record not written by members of the group. “John the Revelator,” written of course by the late “Rusty” Goodman, has always been one of my favorites and Crimson Gold does a good job on it.
Overall there were a few pitchy spots, and I can hear the potential for even tighter vocals. The song choices were strong, the vocals consistent and the message clear. I would recommend giving a listen to this disk. Other songs included are; “It’s All About Jesus, Land of No Goodbyes, and I’m Going Up.”

Crimson Gold has been one of the top regional groups in Missouri for years. They consistently put out top quality self-produced recordings that more people outside of the Missouri/Illinois area need to hear. I highly recommend this recording.
