Communication Is Important

After last month’s article telling of my love/hate relationship with cell phones, you will now be surprised to find me singing their praises!

By now, you all know that Jim and the guys were stranded for three days in a snow-storm in Wyoming. I found out about it because our manager, Bob, received a call from a man at the Wyoming Department of Transportation saying he had a message from Jim. He wanted us to know that they were stranded, but fine. This was late Wednesday evening.

At this point I’ve already not spoken to Jim in over 24 hours. So, all night long, I wonder... Exactly when did they become stranded? How much fuel was in the bus? Do they have enough food? Or water? I spent the next day, on the phone and on the internet, trying to find out any information that I could. All the while, knowing that I wouldn’t be certain that they were safe until I heard from Jim. Knowing if Jim had been able to call, he would have called. (Remember, this is “Wireless” we’re talking about...) Also knowing that they were stranded where there was no cell phone service and there would probably be no call any time soon!

Then around 8:00 PM, Thursday evening, Jim called. He had been able to get out and get to a place where he had cell phone service. He was able to assure us that although they were still stuck in the snow, everyone was safe. SAFE! What an awesome, comforting word!

So now, I’m thanking God for cell phones!!! I vow that the next time Jim gets a call during dinner, I’ll be more understanding. I promise to not be upset when I’m out in a public place and people are practically yelling into their phones because they are having a hard time hearing (never understood that one, but you’ve seen it too!). I will be forever grateful that because of a cell phone, I got a good night’s sleep, knowing that my sweetie was safe!! Thank God for cell phones!

I tell you all of this to first, thank those of you who prayed for the safety of Jim and the guys while they were stranded. Although it was a very difficult and uncomfortable circumstance, it could have been much worse. Second, I want to remind you that communication is very important in a relationship.

Although I’ve teased Jim over his cell phone and unmercifully made him the topic of last month’s article, I really do appreciate his communication skills. He’s not the type to say ”I told you that I loved you when I married you and I’ll let you know if I ever change my mind”. He communicates with me about what he’s doing on the days he is home and we talk every day, sometimes several times a day when he’s on the road. Jim knew that the stress and worry I felt for him in that snowstorm could only be assuaged by hearing his voice and the assurance that he was alright.

Communication, a simple phone call, calmed the storm raging in my heart and reminded me that I am loved!

Elaine Harcourt's avatar Melissa, I, too, have a love/hate relationship with cells. At times they are vital but at other times they are a nuisance! I'm so gald the guys made it home okay & were safe through all their troubles. Thanks for sharing. God bless you.

God is good all the time & all the time God is good.
