Cavaliers Quartet is an up and coming group based out of middle Tennessee. The group was formed by brothers Anthony and Wayne O'Neal with help from friends Jason Reese and Ben Mullins. This group made some noise last year when their single "Jesus Saved My Soul" earned the group some impressive airplay - including ranking on the SoGospelNews.com Top 40 Weekly Chart for several weeks. Their next single, "Keep Drinking Water From the Well," went on to spent over 20 weeks as the #1 Fan Favorite song on the chart. No too shabby for a local group in the middle Tennessee area.
The group is now releasing their sophomore record for Song Garden Music Group - God Is. Once again produced by the Mike LeFevre Quartet's David Staton, this album features another strong selection of songs. God Is is chock full of radio-ready songs - especially cuts like the title track "God Is," "It's Alright," "Jesus Knows Just What to Do," and lead single "I'll Be Long Gone." Much of the strong song selection comes from the fact that most of these songs were written by much-sought-after songwriters like Dianne Wilkinson, Chris Binion, David Staton and others.
Cavaliers Quartet tap into the church music sound with their strong version of praise and worship classic "You Are My King (Amazing Love)" which utilizes some interesting harmonies. "Praise to the Lord Almighty" sounds very similar to something Mike LeFevre Quartet or Brian Free & Assurance would record with its impressive vocal arrangement.
There are a couple instances where things could have worked out a little better - most notably the plodding ballad "That's What Love Looks Like." Lyrically, the song has a fantastic turn around, but musically just drags down the pacing of the record. There are also a couple instances where the blend could be tightened up a bit - but not enough to really distract the listener.
Overall, God Is is a great introduction to the Cavaliers Quartet if one hasn't already heard the group. Song Garden has found a great new group to develop in this quartet.
