Canaan Bound is one of the central United States' most popular quartets. All of the members' biographies are impressive, and the group has a real heart ministry.
Just a Matter of Time kicks off with the catchy and radio friendly "Just a Matter of TIme" before moving into the ballad "Ready to See Him." The group really shines on the upbeat moments - such as the aforementioned album opener, "Just Got to Praise You," the bluegrass-flavored "It's a Beautiful Day," and album closer "Headed to a City." Their ballads tend to bog down the recording as there's not a lot of intensity in their voices and a real lack of dynamics. The upbeat numbers don't rely on those kinds of aspects in vocals as much as a ballad or mid-tempo cut does.
It's apparent just from listening to this recording that Canaan Bound loves singing Southern Gospel - but in order to really take it to the next level, the group needs to invest in better arrangements and stronger tracks. Too many times on this recording the tracks are hurt by the use of canned strings, dated keyboards and typical vocal arrangements. Also, the group's blend has a tendency to go all over the place on some cuts - especially ballads like "Ready to See Him" and "Flowers Will Bloom" (which at times feels forced and harsh).
The album packaging also fails to list a producer, songwriters, and group information. Canaan Bound has the potential to really be a great sounding quartet. However, they need some more fine-tuning to really take it to the next level.
