The Ascension Quartet is an up and coming quartet based out Lebanon, Missouri that is quickly making a name for themselves in not only their area, but also the national seen as well.
Consisting of Danny Parnell, David (Homer) Hartwell, Jonathan Edwards, and Michael J on vocals - the group is headed down the right track with the release of their Heartwarming Records project We Represent the King.
Expert producer Nick Bruno produces another fine recording with these guys. We Represent the King also features tracks by studio musicians like Kelly Back, Dunkin Mullins, Bruce Watkins, and more!
The album kicks off with the hymn-like sound of "We Represent the King" before going into the album's second tune, the mid-tempo "You Don't Have to Leave Hungry." The group has a nice tenor with a good classic quartet tenor sound - but at times, especially on this cut, feels a bit shaky and uneasy on his part. A little more confidence in the studio would really enhance his sound (this is also noticeable on another ballad led by the tenor - "May the Lord Jesus Touch You Now").
"Meeting In the Sky" is a great, barn burner of a song that would do very well at Southern Gospel radio. Baritone Jonathan Edwards pulls out all the stops on this album highlight. The album's first single, "Whatever It Takes," has a nice country feel to it and is surely a concert highlight.
"An American Family" is a nice choice that should be a fan favorite with its patriotic story line. The group's blend isn't especially strong on this cut, but with more time singing it in concert, they should get a good sound on it quickly.
Overall, We Represent the King is an album that the Ascension Quartet can definitely be proud of. The inclusion of live strings would have really enhanced the sound, as well as a little more confidence in the recording studio. These guys have a great sound that will surely find a home in Southern Gospel circles.
