When I first joined the Blackwood Gospel Quartet back in early September, I knew immediately that I was in for a wild ride. It's been nearly 2 months and I'm already having more fun than I ever imagined I would be. It's been a busy couple of months as well. Alabama, Iowa, Texas and Massachusetts are just a few of the places the date book has taken us and we've been seeing great attendances and meeting great people all along the way.
One of the things I'm finding out very quickly is just how much people love the Blackwoods. I'm only 26 years old and didn't have the privilege of hearing the original group. However, that's not the case with most people. What I'm beginning to discover is that most folks, when they think about gospel music, they think about the Blackwood Brothers and the Statesmen Quartet. Many of them have never even heard of the groups I grew up listening to. What I have come to realize is that I viewed gospel music from a very small perspective, and the truth of the matter is that there's a big and very real world out there.
We were recently in Fort Worth, Texas at a concert with promoter Richard Tosh, a good friend of the Blackwood family. It was a fantastic night with a building full of fantastic people. It's amazing to see a quartet more than 70 years old still selling CDs like they're hot cakes. You'd think they were going out of style. Well, the good news is that they're not. In fact, the next chapter in their story is just beginning. But, you don't have to take my word for it. Just ask the people in the seats.
I'll wrap this up by leaving you with this. When the guys first informed me that they wanted me to take the reigns of this monthly article, I have to admit, I was a bit nervous. I jumped at the chance, mind you, but was weary of the fact that I'm very opinionated. I cannot guarantee that I'll stay out of trouble. You've got to understand, with group members like Dustin Bearden, Brad Smith, Mark Blackwood and the occasional company of Jonathan Sawrie, I've got an endless supply of material. In conclusion, I can most definitely assure you of one thing - if you promise to keep coming back, I will promise to keep it interesting.
Until then,
Dave Mann and the Blackwood Gospel Quartet

How many line ups have they had this year. The revolving door continues. The sound was MUCH better last year but with this group, just wait. It will be different next month.
Make sure to check back December 16th (a month from now) and see how we're doing Tommy. Thanks.
