The Passion of The Christ

The Passion Of The Christ
A review by Joseph S. Bonsall

Much has already been written or said about this Mel Gibson project.
Every talking head on television and every newspaper columnist has certainly weighed in with an opinion.

Therefore, this little commentary will not be very long.

I urge you to forget about the hype.......the Gospel according to Mel....... The Greatest Story Ever SOLD....... warnings of anti-Semitism....... Diane Sawyer....... etc., etc.

I simply urge you to go and see this movie as soon as possible.

Is it hard to watch sometimes? Oh, yes!

Is it bloody and violent? Yes, it is!

Is there love beyond measure? Oh, yes, there is!

Is there a promise of victory over sin and the grave because of the willing sacrifice of God?s only Son? YES.......THERE IS!

Is this movie true to the Scriptures? YES, IT IS!

The Passion is the "old, old story"? that you know by heart. Mr. Gibson has managed to put it all there on a big screen, kind of unplugged and raw and very personal.

If Jesus Christ already lives in your heart....... you will weep at times because of the great love shown by the Savior. He had to do this in order to change the world and provide a plan of Salvation for mankind. Although, as the old Gospel song says, "He could have called ten thousand angels......." at anytime....... to free Him from the torment and lift Him high above the moment. While watching the Son of God bearing my sin on a movie screen, I found myself sort of wishing that He would do just that!

However, I have read the book, and I know the ending. Christ endured the torment and pain and suffering....... for me....... and for YOU!

When that stone rolls away at the end....... well, there is victory and truth and a promise for the world! I am overwhelmed and thankful.

Thanks Mr. Gibson. The Passion is a great movie that arrives at a very poignant time in our history.

Do NOT miss seeing this film!

I saw this movie yesterday. It greatly moved me and reminded me not only of Christ's great agony in purchasing our redemption, but also that Christ has made this present world today so much of a better place. Since the advent of Christ and His message that has spread across the world many countries have outlawed the horrible methods of punishment that were prevalent in the ancient Roman world.

As one Church of God songwriter once penned, "His blood has made a change in me." Praise God for that change.

I will be viewing the movie tomorrow. I just wanted to say that I have recently came acrossed a song just released by Third Promise "What He Would Not Do" that diplicts the message that Christ would never change his mind for what He did on Calvary for you and I. A Challenge to all viewers and listeners of southern gospel radio. Please view this movie because it brings to reality the long-suffering and pain that Jesus went through for you and I; then listen to "What He Would Not Do"; by Third Promise and see if this beautiful song that has already touched so many hearts; Goes perfectly with this movie. God Bless You All

I saw this movie about three weeks ago at a pastor's conference in Florida. I have been in church all my life (38 years). I went to a Christian school, attended a Christian college and am now serving in full time ministry as an associate pastor. I have heard about, studied, preached, taught, and sung about the cross for a long, long time. I read all the reviews and listened to the talking heads and had even listened to some folks who had already seen the movie. None of this even came close to preparing me for what I was about to experience. I had been praying for a long time that God would bring the fresh oil of revival to my soul (yes, even preachers need revival!) and He used this movie to answer my prayer. The last three weeks have been like nothing I have ever experienced in my Christian life. The power of the Spirit is fresh upon me, I have a love for Christ like I never had before and a love for people like I never knew existed. If you are a believer, please watch this movie prayerfully and let the Holy Spirit move in your heart. You will be amazed at what He will do in your life if you will let Him.
Our local theater has afforded to our church a great opportunity to stand outside the theater and pass out information anwering questions that the movie will raise and showing people how to have a personal relationship with Jesus. As I stood there last night watching folks as they came out of the theater, the looks on their faces were incredible. Some were truly broken, others were just stunned. All were quiet. This is without a doubt one of the greatest evangelistic opportunites that will ever be afforded to the church. Ask God how He would have your church to reach out to the millions who will see this film in the coming weeks. God bless you.

I Have never had a movie impact me so powerfully as did "The Passion Of The Christ". Of course, it's not just a movie. It really happened. Only worse. I sat in my seat sobbing and wincing with every blow. I caught myself mouthing the words "I'm Sorry! I'm Sorry!" It was my sin that nailed Him to that tree. Our sin!

Now, 4 days after seeing the movie, it's just under the surface. Quiet time, prayer time, a song about the cross or the blood, or numerous other things and I'm sobbing again. It doesn't take much.

All I know is that I love Him more today than I ever thought possible, and I pray I never get over it.

We are all indebted to Mel Gibson for having the courage of his convictions to make this film, endure the persecution, and bring it to us.

Thank You, Lord for all you did for me!

I recently watched this incredible movie and I have never seen anything like it. All of the other movies that depict what Jesus did for us on the cross don't even come close to what was depicted in this movie. God really gave Mel Gibson a real insight into something that is desperately needed....a realistic look at just what Jesus did for us. This movie is very graphic but even as graphic as it is there are still things that our Savior went through that aren't shown. There were kids sitting behind us at the theater who were cutting up and making jokes before the movie started but by the time the movie was over they were in tears. This movie is making an impact like no other and I pray that people everywhere will watch it and see just how much Jesus loves us. We have heard about the cross and what Jesus did for us all our lives but it has never been as real as it is now.

After seeing "The Passion", Nancy and I drove home and said nothing. We were reminded why we do what we do. After all the blah...blah...blahs, I am forever greatful to Mel Gibson and his determination to not only make an extraordinary film, but take on the persecution. I find myself even more determined to tell the world what he did for me.

I kept thinking, "He did this for me." If this doesn't touch you, you can't be touched. It was the first time I have seen this portrayed so realistically. I too flinched every time they hit him. O what a Savior!

This movie will cause a world wide revival--IT IS AWESOME AND POWERFUL!!

  11.    Southern Gospel Fans ~ 03/03/2004

This movie truly shows the Love of God. I urg you greatly to go see this. Mel did a very good job picking the actors/actresses. There is no greater movie that shows in that graphic detail what Jesus wen through, and there will probably be no other. If there would be another, it would just be a repeat and pointless. Mel Gobson put his career on the line, and that's what a TRUE Christian does. I give Gibson a standing applause...and I also give Jesus a standing applause. There is no greater love, and no greater movie to show his love than this. I hope everyone see's this. Even those who critisize it. And I pray for those who critisize it or say "I already know the story." You may, but you have no clue how real this looks and how good this makes you feel in the end when you see Jesus...can't say, gives away the ending.......JUST GO SEE IT!

I love the movie. It really shows love. Not only the love of Christ, but the love we should have for one another. It really reminds us about what he did for us and what we should do for others. If we expect to win souls we have to show the love that Christ showed, and what he still shows today.

I have heard a lot of bad stories about this flick.
The Anti semitism is what bothers me the most (for personal reasons).
Also the fact that Mel Gibson is associated with a anti-semitic catholic cult, the name escaped me (Holy family or something..)
I find it very surprising that on this board everybody embrases Mr Gibson readily for making this movie. while he's an actor who starred in many many violent pictures....and sometime ago everybody was on mr Hendrix back for the Bette Midler deal..
Don't get me wrong, I do not condemn either mr Gibson or Ms Midler.
Got just the double moral itch.
    Duke

  14.    Bob Whitehead ~ 04/20/2004

I heard a lot of lies about this movie. There was nothing anti-semetic in the film. While I'm not Jewish, I love Israel, and I love the Jewish people. I wouldn't stand still for anything remotely anti-semetic. There wasn't anything anti-semetic in the movie. It was a story of Love. The great forgiving love of God for all mankind.

Mr. Gibson's testimony of turning his life around in recent years due to his study of the Scriptures has been well documented. So, I shouldn't give him a second chance?

He is part of a group in the Catholic church that still holds the Latin masses. Not an anti-semitic cult. With all the people trying to crucify Mel over the movie, if this were true, don't you think it would have been blasted all over the press?

You're entitled to your opinion, certainly. However, I THANK GOD that Mel loved the Lord and what HE did for us enough to finance and make this movie, and endure the persecution. Praise God!!!!

    Dear Mr Whitehead,

    Maybe I wasn't clear enough, I didn't have a opinion yet.
I didn't know that Mr Gibson was conferted or "saved" as you all say.
    I'm fine with that.
I sincerely think "persecution" is too strong a word, I think "free publicity", are the words you were looking for.
    Duke

  16.    Bob Whitehead ~ 04/21/2004

No, I used the exact words I meant. He has been unmercifully persecuted because he has stood for his convictions. My respect for him couldn't be greater.
