Skyline Boys - How I Picture Me

Producer: Zane King
Label: Journey Records
Website: http://www.theskylineboys.com

This release from the Skyline Boys was my initial introduction to their music, and I really liked what I heard. The boys showcase a robust sound that is very pleasing to the ear. They also show a ton of potential and I see these guys making steady progress over the course of time.

The recording starts off with the oldie goldie, "THE UPWARD WAY" before breaking into the ballad, "YOU'VE NEVER BEEN ALONE", which features tenor, Jodi Hosterman, and is followed up with the medium tempo title song, "HOW I PICTURE ME", featuring baritone, Bobby Nitz.

Another great ballad which features Jodi is entitled, "BUT THERE FOR GRACE". This recording features several ballads (and they tend to feature Jodi) including, "CROWN OF THORNS", "IT TOOK HIS BREATH AWAY" and "BRIDGE OF GRACE". With that said, there are also several enjoyable uptempo tunes as well including "GET ON BOARD", the Hinson classic "HE'S LEADING THE WAY", "LOOK WHO'S IN THE SHIP" and "WATCH YOUR STEP".

I must give special mention to the novelty tune, "ODE OF JONAH". I've never been one who really gets into many novelty tunes, but this one is worth the listen. Lead singer, Robert Nykamp is featured on the song (which he wrote himself) and he could not have done a better job with it; you simply must listen to it yourself. (The ending is quite comical as well, reminds of the old monologue of "Phone Call from God" by Jerry Jordan back in the early/mid 1970s)

As I stated in the beginning, this was my introduction to the music of the Skyline Boys and I am impressed. They have a rich, full sound and a very good blend. The overall production quality of the CD is very good and the cover photography and graphics are quite classy. If I had to pinpoint one thing, it would be there isn't some outstanding quality about them that is uniquely theirs. While I enjoyed the CD very much and it definitely will make its way to my CD player from time to time, there just isn't something that makes me say "WOW.this is awesome!" The potential is definitely there, it just needs to be realized.

It Took His Breath Away, features my Uncle Bobby. He didn't write it, but he could have written it about my grandfather (his father). Pappy had cancer, and this song (in my opinion) describes Pappy, and what we all went through in a very special way.

These guys have come a long way over the last few years. Dennis Powers has worked hard to build this group up. This is by far the best lineup he's ever had. I don't just say that because Uncle Bobby is singing baritone, and helping with arranging and vocal technique. grin

They really have a good blend.Give it time, and I beleive that WOW factor will come into play very soon. I just wish thhey had a band. I'd love to play drums for them :-D
