It’s All About Perspective

I can’t remember every Valentine’s Day Tim and I have celebrated together. I know through the years he has given me flowers, taken me to dinner, candy, chocolates – you know, the usual. Ironically, I clearly remember two years because we spent them without each other. I can remember every detail of Valentine’s Day 1984 – it was the month before we got married. Tim was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi and I was here in Nashville. He was supposed to come home for a three day weekend, but got in some trouble (big shock) and wasn’t allowed to leave the base. Boy was I scrambling to put the wedding together! The other time was 1991 – he had been deployed to Desert Storm. Funny how I remember the unhappy ones more clearly. It’s all about perspective.

Isn’t it funny how we always seem to remember the bad stuff better? We’ll remember one negative comment a lot faster than we think of the nice things that are said. Phillipians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” If it was so easy to automatically remember the good things, we wouldn’t have been given an instruction that tells us to “think on these things.” It is presented in a way that shows our thought process for the good does not happen by osmosis. It takes an effort to take every thought captive.

I’m happy to say that Tim is long past the days of getting reprimanded for his behavior as a young GI. He began reading a book by John Eldridge called The Wild Heart. It is supposed to be a real good book about being a godly man, husband, etc. I’ve noticed he has been trying to do little things like dry the dishes and fold laundry. He even brought me roses yesterday. I responded with, “What chapter was this?”

Well, I’ve decided that the best way to peace of mind is to “think on these things.” That’s exactly what I plan to do. I thanked Tim for the roses. “Tim, I still expect something good for Valentine’s Day…”

till next time…
Sally

Great article. Thinking on good things - good food for thought and one I need to practice more.
