Dove Brothers Quartet

The Dove Brothers are a solid Southern Gospel quartet who seem to be having some very long awaited success. The apparent result of that change brought about the Doves Brothers first number one hit, "I Can Pray". Tell us a little behind the song, how you decided who would be featured on it, and who did the arranging?

When we heard the song, we knew Jerry Martin was the man for the Job. Danny Crawford arranged the song and Crossroads got the song through the mail. Before we started our ballads, Chris White said, “Hold off guys before you start the ballads. I have something I want the group to hear.” The rest is history.

How has this song effected your ministry?

It has brought that moment we needed that really touches the Heart. We are seeing this song really ministering to the people.

How has it effected the way you minister in church services?

The message of I Can Pray has a message that speaks to everyone.

It seems I remember a story you told once that said that all of you are from the same town and went to the same high school. Was that just an interesting story or is it true?

It’s true. David Hester, Eric, Jerry Martin and myself grew up in Bladenboro, NC together and also went to the same school. We don’t know where Jerry Kelso was born and he doesn’t either!

Who is the person that you never turn your back to on the bus? What's the worst practical joke they have pulled while traveling on the bus?

From time to time all of us will pull something on each other so we really couldn’t pick just one. Just make sure you watch those silent types, they will really get you! I won’t mention any names but he sings real high! As far as the worst practical joke that has been pulled, well we also couldn’t pick just one.

I'm sure that all five of you are touched by different songs that the Dove Brothers perform every night. Which song touches each of you as you minister to the audience every night? Is there any song that each of you have performed in your life that has changed your life forever?

"I Can Pray" has touched all of us and it has brought a revival in our group.

What's the one quirk that each of you has that would surprise our readers?

Eric likes to clean his house, Jerry is a neat freak, McCray listens to a lot of “Talk Radio”, David has a schedule for everything and Jerry Kelso has a “Favorite Shirt Of The Week”. Just ask any of us!

If you weren't singing in a professional Gospel group, what would each of you be doing today?

Well, McCray would be trying to get into a Gospel Group. Jerry would be working in his studio. Eric would be a professional hunter. Jerry Kelso would be a full time writer and David would be a project manager.

What did you do before you began singing?

McCray started with the Dixie Melody Boys when he was 17 and only came off the road for three months before the Dove Brothers got started. Jerry Martin was a heavy machine operator. Eric was a automotive technician. Jerry Kelso played dinner music and worked for a post office for a short time. David was a project manager for CP&L.

What has singing in a Southern Gospel Quartet taught you about life? How different is singing for a living than what any of your fans have in working on a job everyday?

We come across some unique people as we travel across the country. And the one thing that is that different most people sleep in there on bed every night and are with there families every night. Mondays and Tuesdays are our weekends!

Where is the favorite place for the Dove Brothers to pull into for a fine meal? What makes it so special?

For the Dove Brothers anytime we can eat at “Momma’s house”, it is a treat because “Momma” cooked it. We like Cracker Barrels, Any good steak houses but we do not like truck stop food and we are so tired of Waffle Houses. No offense to them but it seems like that is all you get when you get out of a late night concert.

What advise do you have for any up and coming artists?

Quit why you still can!!!!!!! Just kidding! Work hard at your craft and do it skillfully. Be yourself and be faithful to the Lord. If you do that, then the rest will take care of itself.

It doesn't take long on the Internet these days to find everything that's wrong with SG music. A few minutes of seeing the DBQ in concert can quickly remind you of what is right with SG music.
