The Quicks

Gospel Music is noted for its rich heritage of family groups. In keeping with this tradition, The Quicks were formed in 1999 at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Tim and Sally Quick sang for many years with a local group while stationed in Florida, and until this year, were joined by their two daughters, Rachel and Rebecca. Now, Tim, Sally and daughter, Rebecca make up this family music ministry.

Tim had always been focused on his Air Force career, but as retirement approached, he began to realize that God had called him into the music ministry. With Sally by his side, he took his family before their church for prayer and The Quick Ministry had begun! When Tim finished his stint in the Air Force in 2002, he moved the family back home to Nashville to pursue a full-time ministry in Gospel music. A commitment to serve the Lord, coupled with a strong family bond, has laid the foundation for this ministry.

The musical blend of this group is mirrored by a closeness in their daily walk with the Lord and with each other. This is a hard-working family that functions as a unit, yet is still free to express their own unique personalities. Diverse musical influences, with Southern Gospel roots, are brought together in a blend that is able to reach audiences of all ages.

The Quicks are a young family group making inroads into the Southern
Gospel Music field. How are you evolving and transitioning in your journey?

Tim:  Carefully.

Some people may not know of Tim's health issues. Do you mind telling us a little about what Tim is dealing with and how you handle his condition on the road?

Sally:  Tim was diagnosed with a genetic lung disease in the year 2000 called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.  (http://www.alpha1.org)  He gets a weekly infusion – enzyme replacement therapy – to slow down the deterioration of his lungs.  Tim Quick just couldn’t do this the simple way either – he’s allergic to his treatment! Tim had a near brush with Anaphylactic Shock after only four weeks of treatments.  After many months of waiting, the doctors decided to try a risky move and heavily pre- and post-treat Tim to prevent an allergic reaction.  It has worked for these seven years, but I still can’t bring myself to leave him alone on treatment days.  He isn’t able to function on those days, so if you have his cell number, don’t call him.  (He agreed to a business deal one time that I had to get us out of.)  Seriously, Tim amazes us every time he sings.  He only has 30% lung function, is on oxygen at night, and on loads of medicine and inhalers.  But to look at him and hear him sing, you would never know anything was wrong.  That’s how God works.

What is your new recording going to be like? How many songs are from the pen of Sally?

Tim:  Sally has written some of her best songs to date.  She has 9 of the 11 songs we have recorded for this project.  Three were co-written with Daryl Williams.
Sally:  Our new recording… how can we describe the sound we are working on?  We had one goal when we started this album a year ago – how can we reach more people in a better way?  The song styles are pretty eclectic – traditional Southern Gospel, big band, jazz, convention songs, but with harmonies you don’t normally hear out of your average gospel group.  I guess you’ll just have to get the CD.

I noticed that the Quicks have shrunk in size. What's happening?

Our oldest daughter Rachel is getting married in June, finishing everything but her student teaching.  Rachel has arranged to do that part of her education in Louisville, where she will reside with her new husband, Aaron Rich.  Rachel has wanted to be a school teacher for years and has worked very hard to get her degree while traveling with the family.  Though we miss her terribly, we know God will use Rach in a great way in this calling on her life.  In case you didn’t catch it, Rachel “Quick” is marrying Aaron “Rich” – we are calling it the “Get Rich Quick” wedding!

Is there a place that you will keep driving an hour or two to eat at
when you are traveling singing?

Sally:  No, not for food.  But if we have friends a little off of our route, we will by all means go spend some time to visit over a meal.
Rebecca:  It would have to be really good to wait an hour or two… I’m just as happy with a Happy Meal.  Ha.
Tim:  Why ask me?  I always have to eat where the girls want to eat.

Who are the biggest influences on the Quicks?

As far as Gospel Music - The Wilburns, The Happy Goodmans, The Martins, The Hoppers, Booth Brothers, Daryl Williams Trio, The LeFevres, The Weatherfords, Talley Trio, Gaither Vocal Band, to name a few…
As for harmonies - Manhattan Transfer, Carpenters…

What was the draw of Southern Gospel Music to the Quicks?

The millions we would make, HaHa.

I notice that you are always giving Tim a hard time in your articles, and I notice that Sally always seems to bring sanity to the group, but what is Rebecca really like?

Rebecca looks like me and acts like Tim.  Poor child.  She is telling me to let you all know how amazing she is!  Seriously, Beck is the bomb!  She is so much fun – she keeps me entertained on trips while Tim is in the back snoring.  She can read an atlas, count the offering, carry the equipment, and cook like Betty Crocker.  She likes Jazz, old black and white movies, and Corvettes.  From one year old to one hundred, Rebecca gets along with people of all age groups.  She wears Vans and Chucks and drives a mini-van.  She’s drop-dead gorgeous and single, but her parents are not looking.  So keep you’re your distance – Tim has a machete.  Most of all, she wants to be the best Christian she can be and realizes the anointing on her life.

The Quick family is the greatest. My wife and I love them to death. We have watched Timbo grow up or rather get older. We are surprised and glad he made it to adulthood. He is awesome and we always had faith in him and knew he would marry above himself. He has three wonderful ladies in his life and they are really annointed, especially on stage. Love you guys.

Deon Unthank's avatar Sally is indeed a blessed woman. She is blessed with patience to live with Tim without killing him. As a result God has compensated her with the ability to write great Gospel songs. LOL

Seriously, the Quicks are a very talented group who keep working at their craft to just keep getting better every time I hear them. If they are in your area go out to see them, or you will miss a big blessing.

We met the Quicks through a mutual friend at the National Quartet Convention a few years back and I'm so thankful for the introduction. We have come to love this family so much and appreciate their ministry. They're the real deal.

David was called a man after God's own heart. I believe the Lord feels the same way about Tim and Sally Quick. The world needs to hear what they have to sing and say.
