My First Love

Mark 12:30 - And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
I remember the first time I knelt at an alter and gave my heart to Christ. It was July 25, 1987. Nearly twenty years ago. It was a hot summer night in Jackson County Kentucky. I had no knowledge of who Jesus is. I had no teaching of salvation. I had no idea that one must be born again. I knew nothing!

Well, I walked into this little country church and if ya have ever been through parts of Kentucky ya know what I mean. There were only about 20 to 30 folks there and they were all just a singing and clapping their hands. They were happy! There must have been at least 15 guitars being played and 10 tambourines a rattling; they indeed were making a joyful noise.

About 30 minutes into the service I realized I had been crying since I walked in door. Not knowing what in the world was wrong with me I just sat there watching and listening. My heart was aching so badly to understand what was going on. Why were these folks so happy when it seemed my whole life was a shambled up mess.

A dear sweet sister of the church made her way back to me and look me in the eye and said, "Hunny, you need to come pray?" I looked right back at her and said, "I don't know how." She took my hand and lead me to the alter. We knelt down on the floor and very gently she spoke to me saying, "just let your heart do the talking." Well, that's what I did. I poured my heart out all over that alter. Not understanding what I was even doing. All I remember thinking in my mind was, God if You are real, I need You! An hour and a half later I arose from there a brand new person.

You see, when I was just a little girl, my Grandma took me to Sunday School and taught me the song, "Yes, Jesus Loves Me." Even though I was only about 4 or 5 years old that was something I had never forgotten. She may not have known what an impact that would have in my life so many years down the road, but it did. At the worse time of my life I remembered those words. Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so.

I will never forget that night in that little country church for that is where I fell in love with Jesus Christ! He looked far beyond my faults, my shame, and all my sin. He loved me enough to call me His own. You see the Lord completely set me free of nearly 14 years of drug addiction and alcoholism that very night while I knelt by that alter.

1 John 4:19 - We love him, because he first loved us.

Many days have passed since that hot summer night in Jackson County Kentucky. I have found that if I'm not careful I get caught up in the busy-ness of every day living and neglect my first love. God is a jealous God. He tells us plainly in His word.
Revelation 2:4 - Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

In this hurried up life we live by the motto ~ Time is money! Well, in all honesty we don't have time not to take time out for Jesus.

Lets get back to loving Him! Talking to Him! Giving Him of our time and self. When was the last time you took a walk with Jesus? When was the last time you just called on Him to chat? God created us to worship Him; I encourage you to fall back in love with Jesus.

Till next time; Chin up; Journey on!
