Solid Gospel 105.1 Nashville Leaves Southern Gospel

Effective immediately Solid Gospel 105.1 Nashville will no longer be playing southern gospel music. Their new format will be Sunday morning worship music - 24 hours a day. In addition they will be known as Life 105.1. Salem Music Network leaves the following note to their southern gospel listeners:

"To those of you who've enjoyed southern gospel on 105.1 over the years, we thank you for your support. You can still hear our Solid Gospel network on your computer at http://www.solidgospel.com . You also can hear our Solid Gospel 105 on Nashville's east side on 104.9fm. Plus, Southern Gospel music can be heard on 1030am out of White Bluff, TN."

if i were living in Nashville, i would be very very mad. you don't fix what isn't broke.

What a disappointment. Any time we have had business in Nashville or were just passing through, we always flip back & forth between 104.9 & 105.1. It was always a treat to hear southern gospel as we passed through the city. Now, with just the one option, as you go through Nashville you will be more limited on how much SG you can hear. How can a switch to Sunday morning worship music be a financially viable option for them? Because P&W is more popular than SG?

That's too bad to see yet another SG station fall by the wayside. We are experiencing the same issue here in Abilene, Texas. I cannot comment as to the "why" regarding Solid Gospels decision, but would only assume that it's simply a matter of profit. Our station here in Abilene, Gospel 90.5 FM, was sold to a secular format for a rather large profit. After all in the end...it's all about the money, right? This unfortunatly, is what our world, both secular and now Christian, has come to.
As to the new Solid Gospel format of P&W music, this only follows the trend that many of our Christian churches have followed. Big screens to render the hymnal and Bible obsolete, express services that cater to "christianettes" wanting "sermonettes" so that they can get about their business on "The Lords Day", and 7/11(seven lines repeated 11 times each) praise and worship choruses. We have abandoned the traditional service, and hymals of time honored, tried and true, Gospel, convention, and southern gospel music that calls Jesus by name and proclaims salvation by the power of the blood through faith and obedience.
Keeping this in mind, "popular" is what is determined by a populous or population. My fear is that we are going to be hearing more and more of this as time passes. God bless Bill Gaither! He has more than done his part to preserve the Southern Gospel music we love so dearly. My thought is that maybe we can help his/OUR cause by beginning to take back traditional gospel & southern gospel music in the church instead of allowing "alternative" music render it totally obsolete.

I am sad and very disappointed about this. 105.1 was a very important part of my daily life. I have listentened to the new format and find nothing wrong at all, but I love Southern Gospel and always will. As a SG artist myself, I find this very disturbing and even upsetting.

What a discouraging turn of events! I have listened to Solid Gospel since it first started here in Nashville. All I can say at this point is THANK GOD for XM radio and Enlighten 34. They play great music and have started incorporating interviews from various artists.

The news that Southern Gospel has been removed from yet another station hurts. As I travel through Tennessee with my family we turn to 105.1 or 104.9 as soon as it begins to come in and listen to it as far as we can. At home I listen to it on the internet. While I certainly appreciate the Sunday morning worship style which we use in my church too, I long for good Southern Gospel music which we do not have here in Southern Indiana.

I would ask that you please reconsider this move.

  7.    Melvin Klaudt ~ 12/27/2006

Before I can give a legitimate comment, someone needs to define Sunday morning worship music.

As old as I am, sometimes I don't know what Southern Gospel Music is.

What a SHAME! Another SGM station falls to the God of Money!!! Here in CA we have been raped of SGM for decades in preferance to Contemporary Christian, both in our stations and our churches. It hurts deeply that in the heart of Nashville such would occur.
On my future business trips to the area I will be glad for XM Radio as I travel thru Nashville heading East.
This news is sickening at heart!!!

It was quite a shock to me to when I learned my programming was now Praise and Worship. I need my Southern Gospel to keep me lifted up and my spirits hight. Last night, I went and subscribed to XM radio just for enLighten channel 34.

Looks like Solid Gospel needs to change their name. They are little by little moving away from Gospel to other forms of music. TOO BAD!! A big dis-service to their many long time listners and supporters. Wonder if the trend will carry over into the publication side?

  11.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) ~ 12/28/2006

Deon Unthank's avatar Hold on guys, it's just one station that they have changed, and that one is still Gospel music. There are other forms of Gospel music than SGM.
I don't know of any radio station that takes their faithful listeners into consideration before changing formats.

Shame on the programing team. Southern Gospel has been the rock of worship for so many. Praise and Worship is just another wave of the contemporary push all over this country. It started in California and has swept across this nation. So many churches have split their services... One being contemporary and the other they call traditional. And Nashville of all places falling to this wave. All I can say is, PLEASE RECONSIDER! You have the roots of Southern Gospel and now you fold and become the sidekick of the 'love of money'! At least try for a blend to please all types of music lovers.

I know exactly how you feel. Our SG station was sold to Catholic talk almost 3 years ago. You never quit missing the music. I thank God for XM radio and Enlighten 34. I can hear great music anywhere I am now. My sister is one of the listeners losing this station, and she is already looking for another station. Unfortunately there are less stations as time goes by.

  14.    Debtfreetenor ~ 12/30/2006

As the 1st tenor for Debt Free Gospel Quartet and a Southern Gospel songwriter, of course, I am deeply disturbed by this move. But, not surprised, certainly. As our world grows closer to the coming of our Lord we will continue to see good gospel music being abandoned for 7/11 music. On behalf of Debt Free I want to thank you, our fans, for supporting this music we all love and for supporting our group as we travel in this ministry. We will keep putting out the music... you can count on it! And remember...never forget..."God isn't through giving new Southern Gospel Music yet!"

  15.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) ~ 12/30/2006

Deon Unthank's avatar Do you think that when we describe P&W music with such derogatory things as 7/11 music we encourage the fans of that genre to speak very kindly of us?
Really, I love this SGM genre as much as anyone, but
tearing another genre down accomplishes nothing but ill-will toward us.

    Deon,

Thanks you so much for your comments. Private enterprise is always the concern of the folk paying the bills. And where do we arrive at the position that what we like is the best for everyone. I come from the age group when shape notes was the music of the day and the singers stood around one mike and never thought of dancing from one side of the stage to the other. Does this make me right and them wrong?

  17.    Tony ~ 01/04/2007

I'm wondering if the remaining station has gone in for a POWER increase so that they might cover the area both stations served in the past? If so, that would temper my concern.

As for the person in Abilene, TX, the good news is that one of the DJs in the area has bought a station and will be playing country gospel and southern gospel music. I'm just NOT sure when the station will hit the air. The station license was bought from another town and is being moved to Abilene. The LORD giveth and the LORD taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD. Always.

I catch the Jasper, TX Solid Gospel station. The only problem with the station is that the signal is weak this far east which is sad considering that the American Family Radio network dumped its Southern Gospel format (dubbed Classic Gospel) in lieu of CCM. They have a sister station in the same area which they switched from CCM to P&W.

The new station manager put up a tacky message for former listeners that told us that if we like the older style of music to tune in to the other station ... the P&W one. Yeah, like any SGM listeners would be happy with that drivel.

But, like the others, I am happy we have Channel 34, Enlighten to fall back on. Since it's commercial-free, I suspect we came out okay.

This may not be the proper place for this question, but all of you seem to be southern gospel music lovers...Can anyone tell me of a good church in the Nashville area with a good southern gospel music program? Nothing wrong with traditional or CCM...SG is just what we are used to. Thanks for any input.

I miss the southern gospel music. I listened to it everyday. I have two or three Praise and Worship stations that I could have listened to, but I love Southern Gospel. It's a shame is has changed.

  20.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) ~ 01/11/2007

I don't live in your area, and this probably won't even matter to you in considering my opinion, but this is one of the Greatest dis-services you can do to all of your faithful friends and listeners over the past however many years you have broadcast Good Southern Gospel music. I can't get any good stations anywhere in or around Az. to play any Southern Gospel at all. I have talked with different station managers to propose even a Good compromised mix,
(If there is such a thing) with no luck or compromise at all on their part.
Their comment is that they had a meeting and voted on the radio content to be broadcast and that is what they are basing their decisions on.
My question is; Do a few DJ's and radio managers feel that their preference and values are of greater importance than the public opinion of thousands and thousands of faithful listeners and supporters of Gospel Music?
Don't get me wrong here; I do enjoy Good Praise & Worship music, and even God Himself Loves and Inhabits the Praises and True Worship of His People, but we have wondered far, far from that. There is no substitute for the message that has been played through the years and I grew up listening to in the "Good ole" Happy Goodman Family, The Cathedrals, The Hensons, The Blackwood Brothers, The Stamps, The Statesmen, The Imperials, The Florida Boys, The Dumplin Valley Boys, and the list could go on and on..... What about our current day Greats; I won't go through an extended list but one of our Greatest is Greater Vision. You will never come close to the message in their songs with this new "Fandangled" So called, "Praise and Worship music."
Please allow me to list a few of their titles: "For Just One More Soul", "No one cared for me like Jesus", "They should have cried Holy", "When I see the Cross", "We are so Blessed", "Hand in Hand with Jesus", I Sing the Mighty Power of God", Only through the Blood", "It is well with my soul", "The Blood hasn't ever changed", "The Spirit of Brokenness", "The Haven of
Rest", "More about Jesus", and I will end with one that kind of sums up this whole message that I have written. "I would rather be an old time Christian".
(Sorry, I have to add just one more) "I won't have to cross Jordan alone." The list could go on and on, endless I suppose. Try to Match or compare with any of these few that I have listed, and see if the tone of your (New and improved) station will even come close to sharing the same message, hope and encouragement that is much needed in our world today. And I didn't even mention up to this point which I feel is the most important of all; "What about the Spirit in which the songs are delivered?" You can feel the difference in the Spirit if you are discerning at all. The Presence of God Can't and Never will be substituted with anything that this modern day world wants to settle for and compromise with. No comparison. I hope you will reconsider your decisions that you have made for the sake of my Christian brothers and sisters there in your area that listen and have listened faithfully throughout the years. I haven't talked to anyone in your area and as far as I know, I don't even know anyone there. I just happened across your web site while I was looking for an obsolete version of Greater Visions CD's online and I signed onto your sight hoping to find help in locating it. My wifes car got broken into and all of the CD's were stolen.
    Sincerely;
    Phillip Kelley

Please inform me of your stations final decision when you receive your feedback from your listeners.
I may consider sending my support to your station since I don't have any good options here. Who knows, I may move down there in Tenn. someday and I will want a good solid station that I can listen to and support at that time.
I have a lot of family and relation in Alabama. So that wouldn't be too far from them.
    Sincerely;
    Phillip Kelley

how disappointing, I can not say how this station was a blessing to me and now to know that it will not be here leaves me with an empty feeling in my heart. What if we did a fund raiser would this help bring what we love back

May God always bless all the staff that
    had part of this station.

Deon Unthank's avatar Apparently you haven't listened to 105.1 in a long time. For some time now, 105.1 has been Southern Gospel again. Phillip Chambers, who frequents the sight fairly often, is one of the new owners.

Check them out again, they are solidly SGM.
