Editorial - Did You Teach Your Kids To Pray?

I recently had an E-mail from a friend that I went to school with. Of course we are both older than we care to admit, but that means that we have gone through certain stages of life, including raising our children and now entering into the Grandparent stage of life. This friend of mine E-mailed me with an urgent prayer request for her Grandniece. Her sister?s grandbaby was diagnosed with a brain tumor. This sweet little baby is only 18 months old, and this was a terrible thing to be happening. With the wisdom of a grandparent, my friend sought everyone she could find to get prayer for this little one. When you are a Grandparent, it doesn?t matter if the baby is yours or your sister?s; you know what you have to do. Well, needless to say hundreds of people were praying for this baby, and as of now, as my friend so amply put it, ?God is still on the throne?, and the Doctors are giving at least a little hope. Of course we know the GREAT Physician. This brought a thought to my mind. As dangerous as this is (a thought being in my mind), I thought that I would expound on this thought that I had. I do not know the personal situation of this family, but the thought was so strong that I had to dwell on it for a while. This family may had done all the right things, and I certainly hope they did, but my thought was about the majority of us in this great country. The events of September 11, 2001 were merely an amplification of events that happen in daily lives of people all over this country. So, the question that haunted me is this. Do our children know how to pray for their children? In other words, ?Did we teach our kids to pray?? I don?t mean to pray over their meals or before they go to bed, I mean did we teach them how to reach the portals of heaven with their petitions. Did we teach them how to get hold of God and not let go? Do our kids know how to touch God at a moments notice for their children or do they have to call Mom and Dad or Grandma and Grandpa to reach God for them? My response to these questions is that if we didn?t teach them, then it?s not too late to start. We can teach our children to pray for their families, and we can teach our Grandchildren how to pray. My point is that NOW is the time to get this situation taken care of. Now is the time to talk to your kids, if they are 5 or 50. Let?s don?t wait until an emergency is here to decide that our children need to know how to pray. The simple fact is that they are not going to learn how to pray; I mean really pray and touch God, anywhere but at home. So, my charge to all of is, let us examine our families and make sure that they are ready to touch God at anytime, for any need, be it for a little cold, or a brain tumor. As my friend said, God is STILL on the throne, and we need to teach our children how to get there.

a great thought that reminds all of us to do just that: teach and/or remind our children where the power of life is really held, in the hands of God. Prayers is the way to reach that power becuase he loves his children so very much

I have tried to teach my daughter to pray but this thought has been on my mind as well over recent weeks. Did I teach her enough? Did I teach by example and not by 'do as I say, not as I do'?

I've been writting in a journal 'Blessings for my Daughter' that I plan to give her on her 15th birthday. In that I have again told her how much I love her, that I love her enough to pray for her and to try to lead her in the right way.

I've told her how important prayer, Bible study and trusting God is. While I've tried before and most days believe I've done a decent job, I don't ever want to become unaware of the dangers she faces each day!
