Southern Sound - Jan 2004

Do you believe it is January 2004? I was just getting used to the idea of writing 2003. We hope and pray that 2004 will be a great time for you and your family. And hopefully we will be able to meet many of you folks this year as we travel from place to place.

As I write this article, I am very sad in heart. This morning early I got the news that my long time friend and mentor, the legendary Jake Hess has passed away. Southern Gospel has lost one of the greatest lead singers, and more importantly, one of the finest Christian men to ever sing a gospel song. I personally lost a trusted friend, and a man who I looked up too and learned from for nearly my entire life. For many years we attended the same church in Nashville and had occasions to sing together. Not only was he a great singer, he was a great man, and a great father. My heart goes out to the family, but I know Jake is in a much better place.

Of course, we also lost one of the great women of Southern Gospel this past week as well, the ever bubbly Vestel Goodman. I never knew her real well, but I was around her quite a bit in the 70's when the Goodman's had a recording studio in Madisonville, KY. She was always friendly and Christ like in all she did. Now she is again with Howard, Rusty and Sam. I am sure that she and the rest of the Goodman's are also visiting with JD, Rex, Glen, Rosie, Chief, Doy, Hovie, Denver, Cat, James, Cecil, and now of course, Jake. Someday we'll all get that same opportunity. I look forward to seeing many friends and love ones. But most of all I want to see the Christ. My what a price He paid for us all.

I had many things I wanted to tell you about this month, but due to all the recent news within the Southern Gospel industry, I think now is not the time. So, check back next month for recent news form Southern Sound. Southern Sound loves all you folks. Thank you for supporting the finest music this side of Heaven.

My mother dearly loved Vestel and her music. Mom found comfort in Vestel's music thru vidio tapes during many sleepless nights. She met Vestel and was given one of her hankies as Vestel prayed with my mom the summer before they died. My mom died 48 hours after Vestel. I like to think that Vestel had something to do with it. My mom was suffering so much at the end. I hope they are happy together and have no more pain. Dar
