Soul’d Out Quartet - Telling the Story

Producer:  Matt Rankin
Label:  Independent Release
Website:  www.soqt.com

I read about these guys in an article somewhere awhile back and decided to check them out for myself and I am glad I did.  As with many new groups (I say new, even though these guys have been around a couple of years), there is a lot of talent and potential represented here.  Consisting of Brent Hopper on tenor, Matt Rankin singing lead, Joel Trimble holding down the baritone and the bass sung by Matt Fouch, there’s a lot of energy found on this recording, though they don’t over sing or over kill a song, and I appreciate that.  Writing much of their own material, these guys do very well.

Things start off with "WE SHALL RISE", this is the first single release from the recording and is about as exciting as it gets.  I find myself hitting the repeat button quite often with this song.  Great energy starting things off before slowing down a bit for the country tinged, "IN HIS CONTROL".  (Really nice steel guitar/fiddle track on the song as well.)

Relaying the story about the thief on the cross who asked Jesus to remember him in Paradise, "PLEASE REMEMBER ME" slows things down as they turn in a very good performance on this power ballad before moving on to the next song, "EVEN SO COME, LORD JESUS", which is an exciting quartet number, complete with an encore.

Reviving a couple of classic hymns, the group does a very good job with "IN THE SWEET BY & BY" and "HE HIDETH MY SOUL".

An excellent bass feature, "TRY PRAYIN’ FOR A CHANGE" will no doubt become a favorite of many, as will another bass feature, "WHEN I CALL ON HIS NAME".  The following tune, "JESUS KNOWS MY NAME" showcases the group in a more soulful manner, while things switch back to a more mainstream quartet sound with the final song, "I’M GONNA TELL THE STORY".

These guys have a very good, energetic sound; kind of a mix between the Kingsmen and Gold City, but not over the top at all.  Matt Rankin providing most of the material here shows himself to be a more than adequate songwriter.  Collaborating with some of the more proficient writers would really have a great effect on what he is doing.  After a few years under his belt, I predict he’ll become a solid name among songwriters.  I look forward to seeing that happen, and I look forward hearing much more from these guys in the future.  Great singing, excellent music tracks and arrangements and solid songwriting make for a real treat to heart and the ears.

Personal Favs: WE SHALL RISE; IN HIS CONTROL; EVEN SO COME, LORD JESUS; IN THE SWEET BY & BY; I’M GONNA TELL THE STORY

I love these guys! I know all four of them- Matt Rankin and his wife go to my church, and I met Brent, Joel, and Matt F. thgough him. If you ever get to meet them, you would find that they all have such a heart for the Lord, and their singing and songs reflect that. Plus, they're a blast to be around! Keep up the good work for the Lord!
