Many leaders in the Christian community seem to be on a common theme lately. There are a lot of sermons being preached and books being written: How to be Happy in an Unhappy World, Enjoying Everyday Life, Your Best Life Now, and so many other titles come to mind. These are not just “If you get saved, you’ll be happy” messages. Many of these teachings are being directed to Christians who should ALREADY be walking in victory! I wonder what it will take for us to be happy…
My nineteen year old informed me last summer that she would be happy if she could get a job. With her responsibilities with our ministry and with college, Tim and I were trying to do her a favor by letting her take it easy over the summer. (Those of us over twenty-five have begun to realize that summer vacations are never coming back!) Thinking her dilemma was money, I offered her six dollars an hour to build databases for me. This didn’t seem to do the trick. I was stumped – just what will it take to make a teenager happy? A car, a cell phone, her own room, college, friends… we have tried it all! I want all of you to know that I have found the answer! It happened one evening after supper... I had been doing laundry that day – our washer and dryer are down in the garage so I usually bring the laundry up into the house and put it on the couch to fold. I offered that same child a quarter for every dryer sheet that she could find under the couch cushions and she jumped up and whooped like she had just won the lottery! It doesn’t take a lot to make people happy, it just takes the right thing…
I heard a preacher recently ask, “How do you see your future?” I smiled as I realized that all the things I see in my future are things I look forward to! This same future was available to me years ago when I was unhappy. What changed my perspective? Well, if I could package, bottle, and sell it, I’d be rich! I tend to go back to one message that I heard Joyce Meyer make years ago. The message was… don’t keep putting a bunch of garbage in your life. Just allow the things of God in your life. Seems simple enough. But I was already a Christian, what else was there to do? What was the one thing that would make me happy?
Well, I began to make a few changes - I began to pour the Word of God into my life instead of checking Bible reading off of my daily list. I primarily watched Christian programming. I began to distance myself from relationships that I knew were pulling me from walking in the Spirit and I sought wise counsel. I gave up old habits. Instead of just pray – I learned to pray without ceasing! I began to “Walk” in the right direction by “Walking in the Spirit.” There was no magic formula - it was not an easy road – it has been years of painful growth, but it has been in the right direction! When you walk, you are constantly moving forward. (Unless you’re a hermit crab.) The right thing that will make us happy is a walk. A walk with the Lord that is steady – so steady - that even when tragedy strikes, you keep walking. When death reaches your family, you keep walking. When you lose your job, keep walking. When your friends betray you, keep walking. When nothing eventful is happening in your life, keep walking. And the toughest of all – when everything is going great – keep walking! Walking in the Spirit – that is the right thing!
Eighteen dryer sheets – $4.50.
Cost of a happy child of God – PRICELESS!
till next time…

Sally, you sure have a knack for this stuff..... It's easy to see (once you've spelled it out for me) that all we need in our lives is the Lord, and the Fruits of the Spirit! "Think on these things"......
The old hymn says, "Not a shawdow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, but His smile quickly drives it away; not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear, can abide while we trust and obey. Trust and obey, for there's no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey"
Wonderful article and well put. Keep on thinking about the good things.
