Booth Brothers lead the pack with a record 10 nominations – Producer Jeff Collins earns most individual nominations with six
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Deon and Susan Unthank, owners of SouthernGospelNews.com, are proud to announce the nominees for the 2006 SGN Music Awards. As in year’s past, the nominees were chosen by the staff of SouthernGospelNews.com. Starting on February 8, 2006, the fans will get a chance to vote for their favorites in each category.
"Like last year, we expanded our awards this year,” said Deon Unthank, owner of SouthernGospelNews.com. “Every year it gets harder and harder to decide on categories like Producer of the Year, so we broke this category up like we did Songwriter of the Year last year.”
Changes to the awards included a division of the Producer of the Year category. There are now two separate Producer of the Year categories: one for the producer who is part of a full-time or part-time group and another for those producers who do not travel, sing, or play for a living.
“We saw a need to divide this category like Songwriter,” remarked Unthank. “It is very apparent that the most recognizable name is the one the fans vote for, and that’s fine. However, this way we can give the award to another deserving individual who isn’t in the spotlight quite as often.”
In addition to the splitting of the Producer of the Year category, another award has been added. The inclusion of the Fan Favorite Artist of the Year was also added this year. The fans can submit their choice for Artist of the Year beginning on the 1st of February, and the Top 10 submissions will be voted on again when voting for the winners of the SGN Music Awards begins on February 7, 2006.
The SGN Music Awards also opened up the category of Radio Promoter of the Year, which honors Southern Gospel radio’s top promoters. The five nominees in this new category were chosen by the reporting stations of SouthernGospelNews.com Top 40 Weekly Chart.
As far as nominations go, the Booth Brothers led all artist nominees this year with a record setting 10 nominations, including Song of the Year (“He Saw It All”), Album of the Year (The Blind Man Saw It All), Male Group of the Year, a Male Vocalist of the Year nomination for Ronnie Booth, and a Songwriter of the Year (Artist) nomination for Jim Brady, in addition to several other nods.
Following right behind the Booth Brothers were the McRaes and Ernie Haase & Signature Sound with nine nominations apiece. Karen Peck & New River received eight nominations.
Receiving seven nominations was Gold City. Hope’s Call and the Crabb Family both earned six nominations apiece. The Ruppes earned five nods. Receiving four nominations were the Dove Brothers Quartet, Kingdom Heirs, and the Talley Trio.
Mark Bishop, Triumphant Quartet, Hoskins Family, CrossWay, and Gordon Mote each earned three nominations, while the Isaacs, Collingsworth Family, Chuck Peters (of SGLive365.com and SGShowPrep), Three Bridges, Peasall Sisters, the Perrys, Greater Vision, Mike Bowling, Jody Brown Indian Family, and Johnny Minick all received double nominations.
Producer Jeff Collins earned the most individual nominations for his work during 2006. In addition to landing in the Producer of the Year (Professional) category, Jeff earned an additional five nominations for his production work this year – bringing his total to six. Earning five individual nominations were Annie McRae and Michael Sykes. Rebecca Isaacs Bowman, Sonya Isaacs, and Wayne Haun all received four individual nominations for songwriting and producing. Landing three individual nominations were Mark Bishop, Donna Beauvais, Phil Johnson, Daniel Riley, Mike Bowling, Bubba Smith, Heather Day, and Barry Weeks.
The Pacesetter Award is awarded to any artist, individual, or organization which has shown great strides in the industry and has raised the bar for others. This year’s nominees for the 2006 Pacesetter are the Booth Brothers, CrabbJam Tour 2005 (featuring the Crabb Family, CrossWay, and the McRaes), Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Chuck Peters (SGShowPrep & SGLive365.com), and the Talley Trio.
“This has been just an amazing year for Southern Gospel,” said Deon Unthank of SouthernGospelNews.com. “Seeing all the nominees that the staff chose this year makes me proud to be working in Southern Gospel. They are all very deserving of their nominations.”

It is wonderful to see Ernie Haase and Signature Sound nominated. Ernie has a great presence which was evident when he was with the Cathedrals but boy how he doth shine now. Great job Ernie. George would be real proud of you.
Some great names on the list. I didn't see The mcKamey's name on there though. I find that a litle odd being they have more #1 songs than any other group ever. I know things change but they are still a great group who should have at least been nominated.
It's great to see The Booth Brothers finally getting the attention they deserve, but being a huge fan of them & SSQ, it's gonna be hard to choose in several of those categories. I'm thrilled to see them on the list so often. It's also great to see The Hoskins Family nominated for their last project "It's Over, Let Eternity Begin". It is an awesome CD! I can hardly wait to vote!
I really am excited about the award nominees. I am also excited about the Collingsworth Family being nominated for 2 awards! It definitely will be tough to choose for "Favorite Song". Also, I'm glad Hope's Call got those 9 nominations. They are one of the best trios out there today. I'm looking forward to finding out when the winners are announced.
I am glad to see Rick Hendrix up for promoter of the year. Nobody works for his people like Hendrix. Good job.
I am very surprised that Guy Penrod is not nominated as male vocalist. I can understand his being shunned by the Singing News Fan Awards because of who is nominating and voting. I expected different results from the SGN staff.

It just amazes me that almost all of the "nominees" are advertisers on your website. Young Harmony nominated as a"Breakthrough Artist"??? Hello have you heard them? Although I am sure Jonathan spends alot of money with you guys.

Do all of you at SGN honestly believe that all (or even any) of your nominees are better than Guy? I am not bashing your picks. They are all excellent singers, IMO. They just don't measure up to Guy.
SGN: The SGN Music Awards are unique in that they do not represent anyone's favorites or even represent who might be the all around best. They represent the past year's accomplishments. They do not take into consideration anything but the past year.

SGN: The criteria is the accomplishments of the prior year, in this case, the accomplishments of 2005 are taken into consideration. The Imperials have not had a new release in years, nor have they had a radio release in years. As much as we will not argue their talent, they did not meet the criteria for accomplishments in the year 2005.

SGN: As already stated, the awards do not represent the "Best" or the "Favorite," they represent accomplishments for the previous year's work.

SGN: We did at one time consider honoring the various parts however almost every award system operates that way and we chose to be different.

SGN said: Really? almost all? How many is almost all? Let's be realistic for a moment, does advertising with someone mean that they should be disqualified for their accomplishments? If that were the case then there wouldn't be any artist eligble for any award.

SGN said: SGN doesn't promote any artist, we report on all artists. The SGN Music Awards are not FAN based awards. There are over 10 people who vote in the nominations so it takes a majority of votes to win a nomination. There are plenty of other award systems that are set up for fan nominations, participate in them.

Dwayne- I am not sure who you are or what you have failed to accomplish in your life or career. But, let me set a few things straight. Young Harmony has won GAC TV duet of the year, they were nominated for a Gospel Music Association Dove Award, they have sold enough records this year to make them a Top 10 selling artist, their songs stay in the Top 40. As their manager I take your comment to heart. The days have changed my friend. You cannot say Young Harmony doesn't deserve this that or the other. Or they are not any good. Because plenty of people disagree with you. In fact most of the gospel industry and fans have embraced Young Harmony. Your comment is not only rude its ridiculous.I'm not sure what planet your emailing from-But, Young Harmony is nominated in nearly all of the Christian awards, not just SGN.
Get a life, I have heard some NEW artist that blow some of the old ones away. I am told that they have paid to be promoted to find themselves "looking" for there promotor constantly, i.e. not returning phone calls, but only calling when they want money. I think some of these new artists that I have visited with are about to expand to new horizons and surpass many we are having shoved down our throats today. This industry has some "new talent" that is gonna shine and make the rest realize they need a "day job" and that they aren't as talented as you make them out to be. I think that southern gospel fans need to wake up and realize that half of the junk they hear on these sites and some "corporate" owned radio network isen't that good of music. I hear stuff that really sometime I can't believe and see nominations of the same ole' people year after year, story after story. Face it, Young Harmony only wins that catagory because they are the only ones competing in it. They are the only Nationally known duet who promotes there music. They are buying there way to say "I"M #1, everyone look at me, I can't sing, but i've got the money to pour into this thing. You can take any artist, promote him or her enough and make everyone thing they are wonderful. What options to we as listeners and supporters have? Face it, There are artist you have taken money from to be promoted and you have let them down by focusing on only a few. Radio promotions is the biggest scam in Southern gospel from what i've heard. It is crooked, and most promotors are in connection with the major lables. Who cares how bad the music is Rick, right? LETS JUST FOCUS ON SELLING THOSE RECORDS!!! IF the talent line up doesn't change soon, people like yourself will be to blame for the decline in southern gospel listeners and supports. There is a huge conglommerant being formed of some new artist which is gonna step it up a bit and I can't wait to see them do it without the support of you and a few others. Watch the charts and see if you can figure out who i'm talking about.
Enough griping! Lets congratulate the Unthanks- Its been a long time since there was a new game in town. This website and its staff have been the biggest influence for this format since Singing News. I am a loyal fan. I know some of the guys on here that carry tales to other sites, the ones that grip about Southern Spin this Southern Spin that. But, they keep coming back for a reason. This site and its administrators deserve respect for their sacrifices and hard work. I am happy SGN is a part of my daily life.
Keith, you are a bit rude and out of line. Rick nor Young Harmony didn't PAY to to have their nominations. A lot of people use Rick Hendrix talent for promoting. Even with Rick promoting it does take talent to get there. Have you even heard Young Harmony's new project? It is great.
BTW, you are also wrong on your information, which proves that you don't know what you are talking about. Young Harmony is NOT the only duet being promoted nationaly. The McCraes are going great guns, Amazed is making great headway being promoted nationally. Tim and Alice Lovelace are nationally promoted, and that's just a few off the top of my head. So, I am watching the charts and you are wrong.
YOU are also wrong about judging Young Harmnony's attitude, they are very humble and loving people. Your attack on them was completely unwarrented and unjustified.

Sometimes I wonder why SGN even bothers to have these awards. No matter WHO is nominated or WHAT they have accomplished, someone will complain - and yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion - but insinuating that groups or companies are 'buying' the votes, and implying that certain nominess aren't talented, is just rude and mean spirited. Just because your favorites aren't on the list, doesn't mean the ones who ARE on it aren't deserving. I'm not familiar with some of them, and a few of them aren't who I would have picked, does that mean they aren't any good? Does it mean they 'bought' the nomination? NO! It could mean I'm missing something, or simply that we don't all like the same things. I happen to think Angie Hoskins is one of the most talented singers out there, but she didn't make the list. She's STILL one of my favorites and STILL as talented as before this list came out, but the panel who voted felt there were others more deserving. So, do I trash the ones they picked? Are they LESS deserving because I like Angie better? NO!
Deon, your close to being right and I am close to being wrong. Yes, there are a few other "duets" out there but three or four duet's compared to hundreds of quartets, trio's, and soloists isen't a fair statement either. If you do the math you can see the point people are making. I do appreciate your site, and it promotes "Jesus" for the most part. I'm not gonna knock that at all. We just get tired of hearing about the "same ole' people" year after year being nominated for these awards. My point and case is, There is some new talent on the scene that is BAR none compared to the people we see be nominated for awards yet we never hear anything on your site about them. I personally have quit coming here day after day and only frequent your site every other day (if that much) because of the same ole stuff. Its just like the ad and the new recording at the top of the page, everyone wants to be like Kenny Hinson or Vestal. Enough! Every artist needs to be him or herself without having to re-do a whole album of songs that in my book "the king of southern gospel" did years ago. Personally, I love the Hinson stuff but we got people trying to relive the past. No matter how hard you try, You can't bring them back. Lets let the classics be the classics and quit trying to up the annie to "out do" people who have gone on to be with the Lord. I DON'T THINK YOU ARE SEEING MY POINT HERE, I AM SAYING LETS MOVE THIS INDUSTRY TO A NEW LEVEL, IT WAS ONCE SAID, "IF YOU ALWAYS DO WHAT YOU"VE ALWAYS DONE, YOU"LL ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU'VE ALWAYS GOT. It would be much easier for us as consumers to get our hands and ears on hearing the "new fresh talent" if there weren't media groups who try to hold back those by only promoting those who are in the "click" or pay tons of money to Media and Raio promotors to get there music shoved in front of the newbies. Lets let the people have a voice is all i'm saying. Not review boards, and little clicks. I guess in the big scheme of things it doesn't matter because we the "listeners" choose who we want to "buy CD's from" and internet radio and advertising is changing southern gospel totally. That may be our only hope of survival. The more competition there is the better it makes us all I believe.
SOGO ahead and sell ad's and promote those who buy packages from you, because eventually it will all change. I remember when this website a few years ago was not the way it is now. Deon face it, If Salem makes you an offer on this site, you'll sell it for the right price. We need a national site that is owned by the public not conglom groups who's focus isne't really news, its selling packages and promoting only artists who they have a special interest in. I'm confused. What on sogospel is the same thing over and over again? I've seen a huge variety of coverage on artists from those way up on the scale to those a little further down. I think sogospel is doing a great job in bringing new talent to the fans.
When I posted my first comment on this thread, I meant to provoke thought and to get some questions answered. I certainly did not intend for it to begin an assault on the SoGospelnews.com website or its staff. If I caused that to happen, I regret it.
My congratulations to Gordon Mote for two nominations. Folks if you haven't heard of him or his music take the time to check him out. Wonderful man, ministry, and talent.

I was very sad to see no mention of the McKamey family. They have more #1 songs than any other group and they are still the best group I know of in Gospel Music Today.
