Singing Cookes – I’m Going to a City

Producer: Jeanette Cooke
Label: Cooke Records
Website: www.singingcookes.com

The Singing Cookes have long been known for their consistency and longevity as one of the most popular down home, country style gospel groups. You don't find them in the top of the charts much, but they still have a very large and very strong following among those who like this kind of music. This recording stays true to course for what can best be described as, down home singing.

A song that I really like but yet, strikes me as a bit unusual for the Singing Cookes is the title song, “I'M GOING TO A CITY”. Featuring Jeanette, this haunting song leads into the medium tempo, “LAND BEYOND THE STARS”, which is typical for the Singing Cookes style, as is “MY HOME'S A SIGHT TO SEE” , which features Hubert.

As we go through the remainder of the recording, we find “WHEN HE RETURNS A SECOND TIME”, “I'LL NEVER SING A SAD SONG AGAIN”, “IN A GARDEN OF STONE ”, “JESUS, DADDY & YOU” (which is really a neat idea in song), “THE TOMB IS EMPTY”, “ALL I NEED IS JESUS” and “COMING DOWN”. Throughout the recording, the Singing Cookes weave their magic as only they can and serve up a recording that is undeniably, Singing Cookes music.

I am a big fan of their music during the 1980s and early 1990s. But to me it seems that as the years have taken their toll, their music isn't what it used to be for me. Many of the songs on this recording sound the same and vocally they play it very safe. But in their defense, they stick with what's comfortable for them and what works for them. As mentioned, The Singing Cookes has legions of fans, and the fact still remains, you simply cannot argue with success. Though there are no real surprises here, this is the Singing Cookes as they are; simple, down home folks singing the simple gospel. Fans will love this recording, and those who aren't fans, will probably remain that way.

We sang with the Singing Cookes back in 1990 and we witnessed first-hand the tremendous love that their fans have for them. It's understandable - they're great people. They were especially kind to us.
I remember hearing them for the first time back in 1981. I hadn't been a Christian very long, so Gospel music was quite new to me. I became a Singing Cooke fan immediately. I still remember to this day the excitement and blessing I felt from their ministry in song.
From a technical stand-point I understand your review. But as you mentioned, Singing Cooke fans have gotta love em'. May God continue to bless the Singing Cookes!

The Singing Cookes are one of the first groups I listened to after being saved. To me they touch your heart and soul. To this day, 29 years later, they bless me. I feel God's presence when I hear them sing. Great album. God continue to Bless the Cookes.

It has been a pleasure to become acquainted with Hubert and Jeanette and to witness the extraordinary rapport they have with their many fans. I particularly appreciate the fact that they're not slaves to what may be currently in style but remain true to their unique sound. We need more like them! --Andy McKean
