George Younce Passes Away

We received the following information from Ernie Haase this morning:

It is with great sorrow that I must tell you that our beloved George went home to be with the Lord this morning (April 11th, 2005) at approx. 3:30 am.

We are sad and life will never be the same but we are happy for George. He had been so very sick and in much pain for the last few months but now He is healthier and happier than he has ever been.

More details to follow concerning the funeral.

Please continue to pray for the family.

A great loss. One of the all time great singers.
What a man, and what a voice.

  4.    David Bruce Murray ~ 04/11/2005

Younce was without a doubt one of the most memorable personalities in Gospel Music. He was one of the most effective emcees in the business and an excellent bass singer.

One thing I always admired about Younce was his ability excel on the stage and in the studio. Many singers can do one or the other well, but few can do both. Younce was quick to employ vocal "gimmicks" in a concert setting that would thrill a crowd, but he knew precisely how much to scale it back on a recording so that the Cathedrals' studio releases would sound great on radio.

I just posted a biography on Younce at my blog, if anyone is interested in reading a bit about his background. . .

It is truly a sad day to learn of George Younce's death. Without a doubt he is home in HEAVEN where he longed to go and sang about so often! My deepest sympathy and prayers to his family and the entire Southern Gospel community. May we be as faithful as George was in being a witness to those who do not know Jesus as their personal Saviour.

George blessed my life so many times through the Homecoming videos. It was a great joy to see him in person at a Homecoming concert. When he came out of the audience singing "This Old House", I was almost in the heavenlies! May God be with and comfort his dear wife and family is my prayer. Another soldier's gone Home.

Heaven is sweeter today because George is there! I just had to tell this great little thing that happened to family and I 12 years ago at the Robinson Auditorium in Little Rock. The Cathedrals had sang their hearts out all night long. After the concert, George was greeting fans as he sat on the edge of the stage. When my family finally reached the spot where George sat, I told him how much I loved the old song, "A Child of the King", which they had not performed that night. Well let me tell you, George didn't miss a beat. He sat there and sang the first verse and the chorus just for us!! I will never forget that. What a great man he was!!

Only eternity will reveal the scores of people this great man touched for all the years he served the Lord Jesus in gospel music. I know he touched my life, and for His impact on me I am most grateful. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family in this time of great loss. May God bless you and give you the comfort of His Holy Spirit. I cant even imagine what a great quartet He and Glenn have already put together.

    Sincerely,
    In Christ...

George Younce. What a blessing to have known and
loved him. From paratrooper to presenter of the
Gospel. From a bottle of Early Times to tears of
joy as he shared his Jesus! To his dear family -
thank you deeply for having shared him these many
years. George sang it so many times...
"Thanks to Calvary, I DON"T live here anymore".

It was my priviledge to share the stage with George and The Cathedrals on several occasions. The impact George had on my life personally can't be measured this side of Heaven. Our loss is certainly Heavens gain.

  28.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) ~ 04/11/2005

George was a truly beautiful man. I had met him a couple of times at the Qaurtet Conventions and you could literally FEEL God flowing from him. He will be greatly missed. But Heaven has gained another remarkable person.

What a loss for us, what a gain in Heaven!

The Cathedrals are not well known in Australia.
I found them by accident and my life has since been blessed. One of our beloved "old people" was admitted to hospital suffering depression.
I gave him a CD of the Cathedrals and what a difference. He became a new and happy Christian and listens every day to the boys.

I was sad when Glen passed on and the Cathedrals ended their long and successful run.
I know George (through his Christ-filled) life changed many people's lifes.
What a legacy, what an example and what a model.
Thanks to the family for sharing their beloved George with the rest of us.
And thank you George for sharing your great gift with us, such a good natured mischevious beautiful person.
There will never be another like George.

Absent from the body present with the Lord.
Well he always said he was packed and ready to go "Supper Time". the Lord has called him Home (must need the greatest bass singer ever for the heavenly Choir).
I came across the cathedrals by accident and when they came to Glasgow went saw, heard and was hooked. I spoke with George after vthe concert and I was touched by his concern and love (to me a stranger) and I have been blessed ever since. I have wrote to him a few times and was always encouraged and blessed he took time to reply - what a Godly man he was.
I am just thinking the word tells us there is rejoicing in heaven when sinners come to repentance but I can't help but imagine the rejoicing and singing in Heaven now.
what a reunion George & Glen signing personally before the Lord of lords and King of Kings.
My prayers are with his family and all who will miss this inspirational man.
    See you soon George.

My prayers are with the Younce family.

I remember the first Southern Gospel concert I ever attended. I was 11 years old and went to see the Cathedrals in Alexandria, LA. I got to spend about an hour with Danny Funderburk and George Younce after the concert. They made a very big impression on my life. If it had not been for that moment, I do not believe I would be singing today. George, we love you and we will miss you but we are so glad you are finely home.

It was my privilege to see the Cathedral Quartet in person on at least three occasions. Since the area of Illinois I reside in is not a "traditonal" hotbed of SGM, whenever the top groups come here, it is a real treat. One evening, during a concert in Champaign IL, the group took questions from the audience. George called on me, and I asked him to tell us about Big Chief.....and George did, and even did his dead-on voice impersonation. What a faithful servant! What a faithful family man! What a faithful quartet man! He wasn't perfect, but mighty close. Now, no more pain, no more ailments, nothing but being in the presence of Almighty God! Weeelllllllllll.......GLORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Without a doubt, George was one of the best bass singers of all time. He, Glen, Danny Funderburke, Mark Trammell, Roger Bennett, Gerald Wolfe, and all of the other Cathedral members made this group one of the "super-heavyweight" quartets of all time. This group would leave audiences in an awe that matched or even exceeded in some cases the ability of quartets such as the Blackwood Brothers, Statesmen, Kingsmen, Gold City, Stamps, Florida Boys, Dixie Echoes, Inspirations, Palmetto State Quartet, Imperials, etc. George and Glen were the two that were always with this quartet and they made it (the quartet) what it was. Both of them, however, would tell you that none of their success would have even been possible without the Lord. George was not only a great singer, but a great stage personality and a great and humble servant of the Lord. George will sadly be missed, but I know that the great big choir just got a whole lot better. Another legendary personality and voice of Bill Gaither's homecoming videos has "gone home", but we know that our loss is Heaven's gain. God Bless George Younce and his family.

I also mourn at the passing of George Younce, through I'm certain the choir in heaven is improving all the time as God's singers are going home. With each passing, it makes all the Homecoming videos such a deeper treasure. We are so blessed that Bill Gaither has been preserving the voices of the God's gospel choir. My prayers are with the Younce family.

I first met George Younce in 1977 when the Cathedrals were in concert here in Adrian Michigan. I was in awe of his singing and his testimony. Southern Gospel Music will never be the same without this legend and those legends of Southern Gospel. To the Younce Family, I will say this, God Bless each and every one of you as you go through this sad time in your lives. My Prayers are with you.

I grew up listening to Southern Gospel Music and George Younce was one of the greatest influences on my life. The first ime I ever saw The Cathederals in person, that was all it took! I became an instant fan and have loved them all these years. George had a way about him letting everyone know without a doubt that he was serving GOD and and his life and singing was a great reflection of this. There have been some wonderful people who have sang with The Cathederals thoughout the years and some now have the great groups, such as Legacy Five, Greater Vision,Mark Trammell Trio and Kirk Talley. The generation of groups now need to look back on the great man's life and how he served GOD and how he presented himself on stage. George we will miss you greatly but Heaven just got it's best bass singer there has ever been. I bet you and Glenn are having a time!

I had the pleasure of meeting George Younce when I was a teenager singing with a local southern gospel quartet. He took the time to hear about the ministry we were doing and thrilled that we were serving the Lord. I have never met a more caring man. He will be greatly missed. Welcome Home, George.

Family of Ernie Haase, I never new such a nice
bass singer other than George Younce.
There have been other men who could sing bass,
But Not Like George & that's a fact,
now i think the " old friends" song is even
more touching with another gone out of the
    group!
